JOB SUMMARY

The Technical Writer (Environmental Science, Wildlife & Natural Resources) specializes in producing professional biological and environmental reports.

This individual possesses extensive knowledge of California's plant and wildlife species and their habitats and demonstrates the ability to craft precise biological and technical documentation.

Responsibilities include writing and editing biological reports, reviewing reports prepared by staff biologists, and liaising with city, county, state, federal, and other trustee agencies as needed.

The Technical Writer will collaborate closely with a team of scientists, biologists, GIS analysts, data managers, technicians, and administrative staff.

High proficiency in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat is essential for this role. This role offers both full-time and part-time schedules, with the flexibility to choose between remote and in-person work options.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Communicate biological and technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Prepare technical reports, including biological sections for CEQA / NEPA and FESA / CESA compliance.
  • Review site plans, grading plans, permit specifications, documentation, and drawings.
  • Create user-friendly Word documents and templates, such as how-to guides and instruction manuals.
  • Ensure technical language is easily understood by laypersons.
  • Conduct research and gather information from online and library sources.
  • Prepare tables, templates, drawings, and forms to accompany rough drafts.
  • Ensure reports follow a logical sequence.
  • Write clear and concise policies and procedures.
  • Edit documents for clarity and accuracy.
  • Create tables of contents, cite sources, references, insert captions, hyperlinks, and cross-references.
  • Submit drafts to managers for feedback.
  • Proofread documents for grammar and spelling errors.
  • Export Word documents to PDF and package documents upon final approval.
  • Organize materials and complete writing assignments according to set standards for order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
  • Edit, standardize, or modify materials prepared by other writers or staff.
  • Collaborate with customer representatives, clients, and technical teams to establish technical specifications and determine subject matter for reports.
  • Review technical documents from peers and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods.
  • Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.
  • Work closely with GIS team members on the graphical presentation of field data.
  • Track project budgets.
  • Conduct fieldwork and map site conditions.
  • Maintain thorough field notes and communication records.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Provide support to other departments when needed.
  • Write technical details on product announcements, training material, marketing brochures, advertisements, and marketing specifications.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in CEQA / NEPA, technical writing, and / or project management.
  • Proficient in MS Office Word, Access, Outlook, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with strong report organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask in a busy environment and drive company vehicles on various terrains.
  • Skilled in formulating and organizing incoming information.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

During job duties, the employee will regularly sit or stand, use hands for typing and operating equipment, reach with arms, and communicate verbally and in writing.

The employee will also be required to stand, walk, and lift and / or move up to 50 lbs. The role may involve moderate stress and includes both office-based work and occasional fieldwork to gather information as necessary.
