Position Summary

The Dental Hygienist is responsible for providing preventative dental care services, including prophylaxis and scaling and root planning, in collaboration with other PrimeCare Community Health dental staff to patients of all age groups.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide quality, safe, and efficient dental hygiene treatment to all patients regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age, languages spoken
  • Be present, engaged and prepared to work at all assigned shift times in a timely manner, and to be able to maintain the schedule and patient flow
  • Practice the Illinois State Board of Dentistry’s standard of care and follow Periodontal Protocol, based on American Academy of Periodontology, ADA and ADHA guidelines;

along with the rules and regulations put forth by the Illinois Dental Practice Act.

  • Clean, sterilize / disinfect and prepare the equipment, instruments and operatory, per PrimeCare Community Heath procedures and guidelines, prior to a patient’s appointment
  • Take high quality digital radiographs (Dexis), and familiar with the dental practice management software, Dentrix
  • Present pre-diagnosis to the doctor and collaborate with them to co-assess the appropriate treatment plan
  • Educate patients on their oral hygiene, procedures and services, associated adjunctive therapy, and establish / communicate continued care
  • Verify patient’s health history, record vitals, complete periodontal charting, and document appropriately in the patient’s chart, abiding by state and federal laws
  • Maintain patient confidentiality through HIPAA compliance
  • Follow PrimeCare’s safety policies and procedures through OSHA compliance and BBP (Blood-borne Pathogens) federal regulations
  • Complete all patient / provider educational training required by PrimeCare employees
  • Working with the dentist to provide necessary referrals for patient to specialists and to relevant patient care components, as appropriate
  • Follows established department policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and / or infection control standards.
  • As appropriate to the position, participates in specified health / dental promotion, education and / or prevention and risk assessments.
  • Develops and implements individualized dental care plans for patients and risk protocols.
  • Manages the dental office infection control plan to meet OSHA, CDC, ADA, HIPAA Standards.
  • Participate in community outreach events
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Skills or Abilities

  • Knowledge of community-based Dental practices.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for the delivery of dental evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in area of dental hygiene.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for delivery of dental hygiene care.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to move around the clinic site 50% of the time.
  • Constantly operates a computer, computer printer, copy machine, and telephone.
  • Occasionally positions self to maintain exertion of physical strength to move objects of 10 pounds from one level to another.
  • Must be able to transport from one site to another.
  • Must be able to cover other shifts as necessary.

Required Knowledge, Experience, or Licensure / Registration

  • Licensed as a registered dental hygienist in the state of Illinois.
  • Board certified dental hygienist, or obtain board certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Dental Hygiene certification from accredited dental hygiene school
  • CPR / BLS, Infection Control, OSHA, HIPAA and other training certificates as required.
  • 2+ years of clinical work experience in a community health center setting preferred.
