Microsoft Silicon Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud mission.
SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform.
The Data Processing Unit (DPU) group within SCHIE brings together experts in hardware and software design to build state-of-the art highly programmable microprocessor solutions to efficiently handle the large volume of data-centric workloads across Microsoft's platforms.

We are looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer with a background in application frameworks, programming language runtimes, and / or computing frameworks.
You will be part of a team developing computing infrastructure for the DPU and will be involved in all phases of the software lifecycle including design, implementation, test, deployment and support.
This opportunity will enable you to develop domain expertise in DPU technology and make significant contributions to foundational infrastructure in the Azure cloud platform.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate on the design and implementation of core computing infrastructure for the DPU.
- Improve existing systems and services to ensure exceptional stability, efficiency and maintainability.
- Provide operational support to customers, addressing their diverse product feature needs.
- Cultivate a deep understanding of the DPU computing model among our customers.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Rust, Java, Scala, or Python.
- 2+ years' experience developing and maintaining Rust applications and / or services.
- 2+ years' experience designing scalable systems APIs and computing frameworks.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and / or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings : Microsoft Cloud Background Check :
This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire / transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science or a related technical field with 10+ years of technical engineering expertise.
- Proficiency in asynchronous programming using Rust.
- Hands-on experience in implementing programming languages and runtimes.
- Knowledge of LLVM, gcc, and / or rustc internals.
- Experience developing and debugging low-level system software, including operating system internals and virtualization technologies.
- Involvement in co-designing hardware-software solutions especially domain specific hardware accelerators.
- Familiarity with cloud computing technologies and distributed systems.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
