The Opportunity

This position works out of our Alameda, CA location in the Abbott Diabetes Care Division, where we are focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions.

The Senior Software Engineer, Embedded will work independently (or in a lead role) in one or more aspects of the overall software development process (such as software design, code development, testing and / or maintenance) of application software or embedded firmware under a disciplined product development process that meets FDA requirements. #software

What you’ll work on

• Participate in the full life cycle of development, from specification and design through implementation, testing, and support.
• Design and implement software in current programming languages (e.g. C, C++, C#, python), practical experience with embedded C development.
• Works independently on identifying new technologies for implementation into new product development and process improvements.
• Exercises independent judgment in identifying, recommending and implementing significant and / or complex new tools / process improvements to meet company objectives in areas of new product development, product testing, process improvement and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Lead technical teams in the accomplishment of software design, testing and / or maintenance activities.
• Readily adjusts priorities and works within team environment for timely completion of common objectives for multiple projects.
• Technical leadership in one or more areas of application / embedded software development (such as software design, code development, testing and / or maintenance) including project scheduling activities.
• Reliably deliver high quality software within schedule constraints.
• Provides technical ownership of software products.
• Actively participates in product development teams for the development of new products and services.
• Interacts with QA engineers to ensure that software products are robust and of very high quality.
• Research technical issues and propose technical approaches that achieve product and quality requirements.
• Work on significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires and evaluation of intangibles.
• Exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
• Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and performing other duties as assigned by management.
• Implement approved Design Control procedures for software development in accordance with FDA guidelines.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelors in Electrical or Computer Science or related engineering or scientific field.
• 8 years relevant experience and a Bachelors degree or 6 years with MS degree.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in applications programming and / or software development of embedded systems for safety critical products.

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent experience in design sharing between an embedded and app design is a plus
• Some experience in software engineering management or technical leadership desirable. Good knowledge of software engineering principles.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills are a must. Strong debugging techniques and experience on using debugger is required and / or use of testing tools to ensure high level of quality of software product.
• Strong working knowledge of the principles of quality software engineering as described by software lifecycle development processes.
• Experience in Source Control Management is highly preferable.
• Experience on multitasking in RTOS and / or Windows OS software design and development is highly preferable.
• Experience on Internet technologies (web development, application servers) and database design is a strong plus.
• Experience on testing and development in embedded device is a strong plus.
• Knowledgeable on device driver and low level device interface design and development is highly preferable.
• Knowledgeable on microprocessor architecture is a strong plus.
