The Tryst Trading Company food group is looking for a General Manager (GM) to join and lead a team of amazing individuals who share a genuine passion for creating and serving great food and drinks, and who enjoy working in a place that promotes a culture of building meaningful connections with our guests and amongst our staff.

The Diner was opened in Adams Morgan in January 2001, operating 24 / 7 till the pandemic. Post-pandemic hours were reduced and our goal is to return to 24 / 7 asap.

The management structure includes an AGM, Restaurant Managers (RM), Kitchen Manager (KM), and Managing Servers (MS), all reporting to the GM.

The GM reports to the Director of Operations, and is supported by a central team, and four sister locations.

The ideal candidate is a proven leader who empowers their team through effective delegation, motivates through positive reinforcement, mentors and leads by example, and exercises consistent and firm but fair accountability.

They are personable, an excellent communicator, self-driven, highly organized, and someone who works well with others, and who shares our Core Values listed in the qualifications below.

The GM duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Directing and overseeing all daily restaurant operations;
  • Managing Guest expectations and relations;
  • Managing a team of managers and staff;
  • Ensuring compliance with company standards and policies;
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulatory requirements;
  • Running floor shifts as the Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed;
  • Evaluating and ensuring adequate staffing levels;
  • Working with HR to recruit and hire excellent candidates;
  • Overseeing and directing training;
  • Evaluating and addressing employee performance and productivity;
  • Monitoring and addressing quality controls;
  • Overseeing product costs and inventories;
  • Overseeing cash handling & financial controls;
  • Overseeing facilities, maintenance, safety and equipment issues;
  • Performing administrative and reporting functions;
  • Performing bi-weekly timecard reviews for payroll;
  • Performing financial analysis and budget functions;
  • Working with Dir of Ops to improve business processes;
  • Working with Dir of Ops to improve revenues and operating costs;
  • Working with the Dir of Ops to develop and implement growth strategies;

Performing and / or assisting with projects and other duties as needed.

Qualifications

1+ years Management Experience in a full-service restaurant or

  • 2+ years Managerial Experience in a cafe-service restaurant;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong leadership qualities;
  • Excellent people management and listening skills;
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills;
  • Self-motivated and proactive by nature;
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Proficiency in use of POS system (Knowledge of Toast and Restaurant365 a big plus);
  • Proficient in Spanish (written and oral) would be amazing, but not required;
  • Food Handler & ABRA license;
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and some holidays;
  • Must be on call for emergencies;
