At Houston Methodist the Pharmacy Technicianposition is responsible for completing a variety of routinepharmacy services related to medication acquisition which mayinclude but are not limited to : triaging phone calls repackagingmedications dispensing medications labeling medicationscharging / crediting medications compounding medications andinventorying medications.

This position ensures optimal patientsafety and customer service.

PEOPLEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Promotesa positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic teamfocused work unit that actively helps one another to achieveoptimal department results.

Collaborates with other health careprofessionals as needed for problem resolution and / or achievementof identified patient specific goals.

SERVICE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Assists withoptimizing the safety and efficiency of pharmacy operations and tosupport the workflow needs of the pharmacydepartment.
  • Contributes indepartmental efforts to resolve drug related problems andmaximizing patientcare.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performsefficient and safe medication distribution functions such as butnot limited to : telephone triage repackaging of medicationslabeling medications charge / credit of medications compoundingmedications and inventory ofmedications.
  • Providessupport to the workflow and reports any problems to the appropriateparties. Accurately documents and completes paperwork for theassignedrole / function.
  • Reportsnear misses and inputs errors promptly to improve processes andidentify trends. Contributes to identification of correctiveactions and improvement activities and to meeting departmental andhospital targets for quality andsafety.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Uses resourcesefficiently; does not waste supplies. Recommends solutions inachieving departmental objectives.
  • Selfmotivated toindependently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Participates indepartmental projects activities and seeks opportunities to expandlearning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continualdevelopment as a PharmacyTechnician.

EDUCATION

  • HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)
  • Two years of collegepreferred

WORKEXPERIENCE

Zero experience;one year of Pharmacy Technician experience applicable to thespecific work setting (e.g. hospital specialty pharmacy) highlypreferred

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • LPHTLicensed Pharmacy Tech State Registration Texas Pharmacy TechnicianRegistration OR
  • RPI RegPharmacy Intern State Licensure AND
  • SCAT Sterile Compoundingand Aseptic Technique Completion of the 40 hours SterileCompounding and Aseptic course from an Accreditation Council forPharmacy Education (ACPE) approved training program (if applicableto assigned work area.

IV CertificationIntravenous certification (ACPE) ACPE approved IV certification (ifapplicable to assigned work area. See manager for details andtracking certification information) within 6 months

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
  • Proficient inperforming accurate calculations required for usual dosagedeterminations
  • Possessesproficient computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systemsto include hospital / pharmacy related software drug preparationpumps / devices packaging and labeling machines automated drugdispensing equipment prescription balances and portable dataprocessing units
  • Exhibitsstrong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of thehealthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer serviceto all patients visitors physicians andcoworkers
