Job Summary :
The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL) is a 94-bed adult inpatient psychiatric facility operated by the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) located in Denver, CO that provides excellent psychiatric care to a vulnerable patient population.
As one of the State’s two mental health hospitals, CMHIFL serves a highly diverse patient population and embraces a recovery-oriented and trauma-informed approach to care.
You will join us during an exciting time of growth as we increase bed capacity and diversify the patient population served to include both civil and forensic patients.
The Staff Psychiatrist :
- Provides evidence-based psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment in an inpatient setting
- Provides exceptional psychiatric care and truly makes a difference without the traditional stressors of a for-profit or production-based setting.
- Manages a reasonable caseload
- Provides testimony for court-ordered medication and treatment
- Is supported by a team of professionals including medical physicians, social workers, psychologists, nurses, pharmacists, and a physician-friendly administration.
Key Responsibilities :
- Provides psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.
- Collects, organizes, and evaluates information from a variety of sources including patient, family members, outpatient providers and other members of the treatment team (e.
g., nursing staff, social workers, psychologists, etc.). Participants in the development of patient treatment plans.
Prescribes medications as indicated and manages adverse reactions, effectively monitoring and changing treatment as needed.
Initiates emergency therapeutic interventions, such as emergency medications, seclusion and restraints following appropriate hospital policy.
- Provides expert testimony for court-ordered medications and treatment.
- Provides input for clinical and administrative programming of the treatment unit(s). Provides consultation and second opinions.
- Communicates effectively with team members and other hospital staff.
- Follows proper documentation policies including medical necessity for patient treatments. Remains up to date with documentation as described in policy.
Completes peer-to-peer utilization reviews in a timely manner.
- Provides education to staff, medical students, and other trainees. Serves on various committees to assist the hospital in its mission and goals.
- Participates in Peer Review activities.
- Screens potential admission for medical appropriateness (e.g., medical clearance) as assigned.
- May conduct Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) as credentialed and assigned.
- Provides site coverage for medical complaints and emergency response.
- Complies with CDHS and State of Colorado policies and procedures, Medical Staff Bylaws and Medical Staff Rules & Regulations.
- Maintains active clinical staff privileges and current license.
- Provides after-hours psychiatric back-up coverage to the on-duty physician. Provides after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage as needed and assigned.
- Perform other duties as reasonably requested. Provides clinical coverage to colleagues and across units as needed.
- Participates in hospital committees, workgroups, projects and initiatives as assigned.
- May provide inpatient psychiatric treatment and stabilization of inpatient on both civil and forensic units
While psychiatric providers are considered University of Colorado contract employees within the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL) , they are expected to adhere to CMHIFL policies, procedures, and Medical Staff Bylaws.
Prior to hire, psychiatry providers must be deemed eligible to practice in a State institution and must pass background and drug screen.
Prior to beginning clinical work , psychiatric providers are expected to attend and complete any and all training required by CMHIFL.
The Colorado Department of Human Services may decide not to renew the services of a physician or medical professional for any reason by providing the University of Colorado at Denver with written notice of nonrenewal by May 1st of each year, effective June 30th.
Unsatisfactory performance of the duties identified above may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
In the event of termination, the State’s obligation for payment ceases on the date of termination.
