About the Job

The Biostatistician Researcher 6 position will provide leadership and oversight for multiple aspects of a study, including : planning and study design, contributing and writing grant applications, selecting appropriate statistical methods, researching new statistical methodology, analyzing study data, creating and presenting Data Safety and Monitoring (DSM) reports, disseminating results, and contributing to and co-authoring manuscripts for publication.

Work on a broad range of projects requires the biostatistician to have extensive subject matter expertise, the ability to apply and explain complex study designs and analyses to a diverse audience and the capacity to research and apply new methodology to complex studies.

Responsibilities also consist of independent management of time and workflow, adapting to new and variable research designs, and contributing to department leadership discussions and decisions.

Essential Functions

20% - The biostatistician will serve as a leader and resource for study design and statistical methods. As a leader, the biostatistician is responsible for selecting the appropriate design and methods for a variety of research areas, including new and complex studies, while being able to communicate the choice and options available to a research team who may not have experience in such designs or methods.

Furthermore, the biostatistician must provide sufficient support and rationale for the design and methods for successfully obtaining research funding through grants.

This includes successfully implementing a wide variety of study designs to ever evolving research areas and methods.

40% - The position requires a wide variety of advanced statistical and study design knowledge to provide the appropriate recommendations for study design and analysis for projects that are highly variable and potentially complex.

Knowledge of the assumptions and limitations of each design and analysis are required for successful publication and dissemination of research.

Because of the variable nature of research and the continually evolving research methodologies, the position requires continually learning new methods for analysis and maintaining best research practices.

20% - Active participation and co-authorship of manuscripts will be pursued. Clear communication skills and the ability to present written and oral results to a diverse team of researchers and non-researchers are required.

Study designs, statistical methods, and research results must be clearly presented and interpreted. This is required for successful publication, sharing and expanding knowledge within the research team and the community, and presenting to data safety and monitoring boards for the safe and successful completion of studies.

10% - The position requires independently initiating and maintaining workflow without the oversight of supervisors. As workflows change, the biostatistician will forecast workflow and time demands to maintain adequate funding.

The researcher 6 biostatistician will also participate in discussions with supervisors and leadership concerning strategies for obtaining new research funds and projects for the department.

In the absence of the department supervisor, the researcher 6 biostatistician may be called upon to lead weekly department meetings in addition to other supervisory responsibilities.

10% - The Researcher 6 position requires contributing to the overall direction and work of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the department (BDAC), and the Clinical Research Support Center (CRSC) including committing time to meet and communicate with personnel inside and outside of the immediate department to continually improve research practices within and outside of the department.

This involves contributing thoughtful discussions and suggestions related to research and research support, assisting in the design and improvement of research procedures (including, but not limited to, contributions to protocol feasibility reviews) and continually refining research practices so they are successful and optimal.
