Job Summary :

The Minnesota Star Tribune is seeking a collaborative, digital visionary to lead our Audience team - a group of journalists dedicated to growing and deepening the connections between the work of the Minnesota Star Tribune and our audience.

The Audience team sits at the center of our organization's most exciting ambitions. Every day, it promotes our journalism to maximize its impact.

It listens to the feedback of our audience and works with journalists to incorporate it into successful ways to tell stories.

On top of every new trend in journalism, the team is an engine of innovation and experimentation that boldly treads new ground for the Minnesota Star Tribune to expand our reach and impact.

The team collaborates with departments companywide to grow readership and digital subscriptions. And it is a catalyst for change, introducing our company to new tools and techniques through training and evangelism.

Practically speaking, the team oversees mobile and desktop programming and promotion, social media strategy, SEO, newsletters, alerts, analytics, reader comments and more.

It writes and edits digital- and audience-focused storytelling, helping lead our newsroom's work in such areas as service journalism and nontraditional story forms.

It trains the company in digital and audience development best practices and will partner with content teams to support and optimize journalism for our audience.

It communicates directly with our audience every day. And it works closely with our company's product, technology, and consumer growth teams, serving as a bridge for the company's digital growth ambitions and its journalistic values.

This team is a growing division of the Minnesota Star Tribune. Its next leader will have an opportunity to shape the next, critical chapter of our efforts in this space, fresh off the relaunch of the entire Minnesota Star Tribune platform this year.

The right leader for our Audience team might come from any number of backgrounds, but will possess a mix of these skills and attributes :

• Experience leading and mentoring talented and motivated teams.
• An expert-level understanding of modern audience development best practices, both on- and off-platform. This includes SEO, social promotion, newsletters and alerts, etc.
• An instinct for using audience data from tools like Google Analytics and Chartbeat to inform strategic decisions.
• Strong news judgment with the confidence to make quick decisions in breaking news scenarios.
• A demonstrated ability to build consensus and bring others along in service of a shared vision.
• A track record of innovation around digital storytelling and audience growth.
• Enthusiasm for ensuring the sustainability of local news, and an ability to collaborate with departments including product, technology and advertising - areas where our commercial and journalistic interests align.
• A positive attitude, and optimism that the best days for our organization are ahead.

As a key member of our newsroom leadership team, the Assistant Managing Editor for Audience will be a critical leader in those efforts, both in the newsroom and across the company.
