Job Description

Job Summary : The Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) Therapist provides person-centered, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented therapy services to individuals experiencing substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders. Must be a clinically licensed behavior health professional such as a LCSW, LPC or LMFT who can practice therapy independently without supervision. This role involves conducting biopsychosocial assessments, developing and reviewing individualized treatment plans, facilitating group and individual counseling sessions, family therapy, couples therapy and documenting participant progress in compliance with Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) and agency standards. Family therapist strongly preferred.

General Accountabilities :

1. Conduct comprehensive assessments for new participants to determine service needs and diagnostic impressions. Assessments may be ASAM assessments or family assessments depending on program that participant is in.

2. Provide diagnosis in accordance with latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

3. Utilize evidence-based practice screening and assessment tools to ensure quality of care and assess participant progress.

4. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with participants, family members if involved, and an interdisciplinary team, , based on ASAM criteria and clinical evaluation.

5. Facilitate individual, group, and family / couples counseling sessions using evidence-based practices.

6. Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress notes, treatment plan reviews, discharge summaries, and other required records in the electronic health record (EHR) system.

7. Monitor and document participant progress toward treatment goals, modifying plans as necessary.

8. Utilize trauma-informed approaches and motivational interviewing to support engagement and recovery.

9. Coordinate care with external providers, probation / parole officers, family members, and other relevant stakeholders interested parties, when appropriate.

10. Adhere to all relevant and clinical activities are following DMH, HIPAA, and agency policies and procedures.

11. Provide crisis intervention and support when needed, adhering to agency protocols.

12. Participate in team meetings, clinical supervision, and training sessions to ensure continuous professional development.

13. Maintain current knowledge of best practices, treatment modalities, and changes in SUD-related regulations and standards by attending a minimum attending minimum of 50 hours of training per year.

14. Adhere to the professional code of ethics set by the your specific licensure board and DMH.

15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Clinical Supervisor or Clinical Director.

Skills / Job Qualifications

Job Qualifications :

  • Education : Master’s degree in a behavioral health field.
  • License : Must be licensed in the state of Missouri to provide services independently. License must not be under restrictions or discipline. .
  • Experience : Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working with individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Experience with co-occurring disorders preferred.
  • Additional Requirements : Must pass a background check and drug screening.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA regulations Skills
  • Strong knowledge of substance use disorder treatment, ASAM criteria, and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
  • Ability to engage participants from diverse backgrounds in a respectful and supportive manner.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to document services thoroughly and on time in an electronic health record system.
  • Familiarity with motivational interviewing, CBT, trauma-informed care, and other evidence-based practices.
  • Understanding of family systems.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and case coordination skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting and Carrying : There may be occasional requirements to lift or carry lightweight equipment or materials, such as assessment tools or paperwork.
  • Manual Dexterity : The position may involve tasks that require the use of hands and fingers, such as typing, writing, and handling assessment materials.
  • Visual and Auditory Acuity : The counselor may need to closely observe participants and accurately interpret verbal and non-verbal cues during assessments and counseling sessions.
  • Mobility : The role may involve the ability to move freely within the facility to conduct assessments, attend meetings, and provide counseling services.
  • Sensory Abilities : This position may require the ability to perceive and respond to environmental and situational factors that are relevant to patient assessments and interactions.
