Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform architectural duties having responsibility for highly specialized and complex assignments involving drawings and specification reviews and approvals, site approval, construction progress approval, life safety code inspections, building evaluations, regulation development and technical reporting and computer applications.

Essential Functions

1. Travels to on-site Regional locations to conduct on-site inspections and surveys of existing health care facilities to determine conformance with applicable laws, regulations and codes relating to certain federal assistance programs, certain federal programs and generally recognized health care facility standards.

2. Conducts inspections and make comments regarding in-process construction.

3. Receive, review, approve or disapprove and / or comment upon health care facility drawings, specifications and change orders in accordance with the various applicable laws, regulations and codes.

4. Complete the required inspection forms in office or on site.

5. Attend educational seminars relating to health care facilities and design and construction standards.

6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in architecture or architectural studies.
  • Requires possession of a valid Illinois certificate as a registered architect.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of professional architectural experience.
  • One year experience conducting on-site inspections and surveys of health care facilities to determine conformance with applicable laws, regulations and codes.
  • One year experience conducting inspections of construction projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of architecture.
  • Thorough knowledge of building construction practices, building materials and trades capabilities and construction.
  • One year experience communicating architectural themes effectively to nonarchitect parties without utilizing technical jargon.
  • Ability to independently evaluate project elements and make sound architectural decisions.
  • Elementary knowledge of basic engineering principles.
  • One year experience in Microsoft Word, processing, and spreadsheet applications (i.e., Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the physical ability to climb stair and ladders, and inspect physical environment and life safety systems to include construction sites.
  • Requires completion of the Life Safety Code Surveyor certification program within 24 months of hire.
