Volt is immediately hiring for an Optical Design Engineer in Oakridge, TN

As an Optical Design Engineer you will :

Design, optical modeling, and opto-mechanical systems. This role involves designing and analyzing complex laser systems, ensuring mechanical and thermal stability, and optimizing beam quality and propagation. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with optical components and systems, strong theoretical knowledge, and the ability to produce high-quality technical documentation.

• Perform ray tracing and physical optics propagation (POP) modeling using tools like Zemax, FRED, etc.
• Design stable laser resonators to optimize beam quality and free-space propagation characteristics
• Analyze mechanical and thermal stability of resonators and their impact on laser performance
• Work with opto-mechanical systems and components such as gratings, Brewster windows, output couplers, beam splitters, adaptive optics, and phase-conjugated mirrors
• Design and evaluate reflective and refractive optics including spherical lenses, off-axis parabolas (OAPs), and telescopes
• Control and manipulate polarized laser beams
• Support laser metrology and diagnostics
• Conduct qualification testing and develop user guides and technical documentation
• Maintain design documentation including BOMs, procedures, and test plans
• Collaborate with vendors and maintain knowledge of optics and coatings manufacturers
• Apply knowledge of Laser Induced Damage Threshold (LIDT) for optics and coatings

This is a full time, Direct Hire opportunity.
