The VP, Finance will lead as a key finance business partner to senior leadership of Washington Spirit and Kynisca Innovation Hub (the Companies), providing sound financial support & analysis.

The role will lead across key areas of finance and accounting including financial strategy and planning, capital projects, transactional finance & accounting, compliance and risk management, and commercial financial support.

They will provide actionable insights and recommendations to support business objectives and improve financial performance, including cost review / management and revenue opportunities.

The VP, Finance will also demonstrate strong leadership skills, managing a team of financial professionals providing guidance and support while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

The VP, Finance will :

  • Ensure the Companies financial operations are robust, efficient, and compliant with all regulatory requirements and business cycles / policies / procedures are all appropriately documented.
  • Develop and implement the financial strategy for the Companies, including leading financial planning and analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Own the Companies' long-term financial model, annual budget and monthly / quarterly re-forecast cycles and ensure that each aligns with both the short- and long-term goals of the Companies
  • Produce monthly management accounts providing analysis by department and budget owner between actual and budgeted / forecasted figures and providing insights (both on a P&L and cash basis)
  • Monitor and control expenditure, ensuring all departments operate within their budgetary limits and identify (and implement) areas of focus / cost efficiency
  • Be a strategic partner with business leaders and provide detailed analysis of financial results, identifying trends, variances, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to senior management and ownership.
  • Support on financing and funding arrangements for projects, alongside the Kynisca team, ensuring financial viability and securing necessary investments.
  • Own day to day book-keeping and accounting including the operations, maintenance and enhancement of accounting systems, accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Ensure chart of accounts, general ledgers, sub-accounts, accounts payable, accounts receivable, capitalization tables are all managed appropriately
  • Communicate financial performance and strategic initiatives to senior management
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders (operating in a matrix), including senior management of the Companies & Kynisca (the role hard line reports to CEO with dotted line reporting to Kynisca CFO), investors (including family offices), regulatory bodies (such as the leagues), auditors and external tax advisors.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, standards and reporting / compliance requirements (including taxes) including league guidelines and those applicable to non-profit entities
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks, implementing robust risk management frameworks.
  • Ensure the Companies financial practices are ethical and transparent.
  • Upholding and promoting the Companies policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Equal Opportunities policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate has / is :

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field and 15+ years of increasingly technical work experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience. CPA preferred.
  • Must have substantial leadership experience in formulating, planning, leading, directing and controlling complex, broad, and highly technical functions.
  • Comfortable working in a fluid 'matrixed' organization with multiple stakeholders, at pace and with change
  • Ability to balance local and corporate priorities
  • In-depth knowledge of financial trends, methodologies, and resource management principles.
  • Experience in scaling accounting departments and implementing accounting policies and procedures
  • Experience with ERP and related financial / operational tools.
  • Wide range of technical understanding across financial disciplines.
  • Experience with cost principles, cost accounting standards, uniform guidance.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and execute deadline driven projects with strong bias for action and ability to prioritize multiple and competing projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement a financial business strategy.
  • An awareness of the requirements of non profit and sports organizations

Location :

This role is primarily based at our Falls Church, VA office. Our front office team follows a hybrid arrangement, requiring presence in the office up to 3 days a week.
