Central Connecticut State University's Department of Engineering invites applications for a full time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering with an emphasis on environmental engineering.
This position will be part of a dynamic Engineering Department that hosts four ABET-accredited undergraduate programs : Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Manufacturing Engineering Technology.
Additionally, there is a Master of Science program in Mechanical Engineering. The anticipated start date of this appointment is January 2025 (Spring semester).

Position Profile
Responsibilities for this position include teaching, service, and engaging in research, focusing on interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research related to the design and development of complex engineered systems.
This tenure-track role encompasses developing and teaching various civil engineering courses, contributing significantly to undergraduate and graduate research, and actively engaging in scholarly activities with a continuous research agenda.
Department faculty are also expected to participate in program assessment, ABET accreditation activities, service on departmental and University committees, advising students, and engagement with employers and community stakeholders.
The regular teaching load is 12 hours per semester, and some evening classes are required. Candidates are expected to be committed to multiculturalism and working with a diverse student body.
The teaching faculty are represented by the Connecticut State University Association of University Professors (AAUP). The collective bargaining agreement defines the renewal, promotion, and tenure process while also delineating support for professional development.
Applicant Evaluative Criteria
Applicant profiles and supplementary materials will be evaluated for appointment based on the following :
Education :
Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field and a B.S. in civil engineering. ABD candidates will be considered if they provide evidence of anticipated completion of the degree by the appointment date.
Experience and Training :
- Exceptional background and experience in Environmental Engineering.
- Evidence of excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Minimum of two full-time equivalent years of combined professional practice and / or college teaching experience at the engineering bachelor's degree level.
- Commitment to serving culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse communities.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Completion of Professional Engineering (P.E.) licensure or verifiable progress towards obtaining it.
- Experience in developing, conducting, and managing undergraduate laboratory experiments related to environmental engineering, complemented by strong organizational and leadership skills for supervising students and maintaining and updating lab equipment.
- A publication record commensurate with experience, demonstrated commitment to pursuing independent and externally funded research, and evidence of ongoing professional development in civil / environmental engineering through participation in conferences, workshops, or training related to advancements in the field.
- Expertise and experience required to develop and teach courses in some of the following areas : fluid mechanics, water and wastewater treatment, waste management, surface water and groundwater hydrology, transportation engineering, civil engineering materials, CAD applications in civil engineering, and civil engineering design.
- Familiarity with integrating modern tools and technologies used in civil / environmental engineering. Ability to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into the teaching curriculum.

Compensation and Employee Benefits
In accordance with the Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Collective Bargaining Union Contract, compensation for this position is at the rank of Assistant Professor for 2024-2025.
