Police Officer

Salary : $25.48 per hour.

Summary of Function : Part-time. Provides for the protection of the students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as the property of AWC, NAU-Yuma, U of A-Yuma, ASU-Yuma, and the Yuma Educational Consortium. Responds to requests for services from the students, staff, and visitors of the educational complex. Patrols assigned area by vehicle or on foot and assist outside law enforcement agencies as required. Enforces applicable Arizona Revised Statutes and Arizona Western College Code of Conduct regulations. Conducts investigation, interviews, and completes written reports of incidents and arrests as required. Testifies in formal student discipline hearing, criminal and civil court, or before the grand jury as required.

Typical Duties :

  • Serve Students. Proactively patrols campus building, grounds, and other areas as assigned to ensure proper and lawful conduct of students, staff, and visitors to protect those same persons as well as the physical property of the educational complex.
  • Monitors calls coming into the department, responding when necessary, providing requested services, investigating violations or crimes, and preparing appropriate reports. Conducts proactive traffic enforcement both on campus and in the area surrounding campus properties. Assists neighboring agencies with calls for service as needed for the area surrounding campus properties.
  • Conducts random security checks of all campus buildings and grounds, and provides opening and lockdown of these areas.
  • Provides security for school functions, including traffic control, and provides personal and property protection during such functions.
  • Provides transport of cash and other bank deposits.
  • Provides first responder emergency medical assistance
  • Support and participate in strategic planning initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Arizona POST certified or equivalent
  • Arizona POST POPAT agility test
  • Written and psychological examination
  • Thorough background investigation, including a polygraph examination, physical, drug screening, including for steroids

    Position Type & Work Schedule :

  • Part-time, 12-month position
  • Up to 19 hours per week
  • Work flexible schedule to meet the program, department, and / or institutional needs, which may include Fridays, nights, and / or weekends and holidays.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and follow college policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of or ability to maintain organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
  • Knowledge of State of Arizona Criminal and civil statutes, rules, administrative orders, policies and procedures, and applicable Federal rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Arizona criminal justice and court procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement methods and procedures, including case laws governing arrest, rules of evidence, probable cause, use of force, custody of evidence and property, and search and seizure.
  • Knowledge of and professional experience with confidentiality and the handling of sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of investigative procedures and protocols for observation of critical details.
  • Skill in current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications, Windows, college system platforms, software, and applications, especially those specific to the department operations
  • Skill in recognizing duties, authorities and limitations of a Police Officer.
  • Skill and ability to be self-directed and to manage one's own time
  • Ability to complete all departmental and / or institutional mandatory training or development
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion, with close attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to provide assistance in a professional and supportive manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and in a public setting, and to relate to others in a professional manner
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of protected information and follow FERPA guidelines
  • Ability to operate relevant equipment required to complete assigned responsibilities for the position
  • Ability to adapt and maintain professional composure in emergent situations
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and civility in all job-related actions
  • Ability to learn geography, roads, and landmarks of College, City, and surrounding areas.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective, and collaborative relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization, students, and the public
  • Work Environment :

  • Working environment may include various locations across the service district, with varying noise levels, indoor and / or outdoor locations as needed to support program, department, or institutional needs
  • Must be able to perform duties in a variety of weather conditions
  • Physical Demands :

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Prolonged periods of standing and / or walking
  • May lift, carry, push, and / or pull, at times, a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and / or twist
  • Safely and appropriately operate district vehicles
  • Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization's physical premises
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit in a vehicle for extended periods and use their hands to manipulate, handle, or feel.
  • Travel :

  • Required to travel to other locations using various modes of private, commercial, or fleet transportation, and as needed to support program, department, and institutional needs
