Sous Chef Job Description

Position : Sous Chef

Reports To : Executive Chef / Head Chef

Overview

The Sous Chef plays a vital leadership role in the kitchen, assisting the Executive Chef with daily operations, menu development, staff supervision, and food preparation. This position ensures the highest standards of quality, consistency, and cleanliness while maintaining a positive and efficient kitchen culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Executive Chef in all aspects of kitchen management, including food preparation, production, and service.
  • Supervise and train kitchen staff, ensuring proper technique, food safety, and attention to quality.
  • Assist with menu planning, seasonal specials, and recipe development.
  • Oversee inventory, ordering, and proper storage of food and supplies.
  • Maintain food cost controls and help minimize waste.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
  • Lead the kitchen team along with the Executive Chef, ensuring smooth service and communication with front-of-house staff.
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on respect and development
  • As a member of the management team, lead by example and foster the core values of company, which are honesty, respect and a genuine connection with staff and customers.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a professional kitchen, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong culinary skills and deep knowledge of cooking techniques and kitchen operations.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and maintain high standards during busy service periods.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Serv Safe safety certification preferred.
