At Houston Methodist the Pharmacy Intern isresponsible for performing functions as a pharmacy technician andparticipates in a variety of routine pharmacy services such asmedication acquisition and distribution including but not limitedto : triaging phone calls repackaging medications labelingmedications charging / crediting medications compounding medicationsand inventorying medications.

The Pharmacy Intern may perform anyduty of a pharmacist provided the duties are delegated by and underthe supervision of a Pharmacist licensed by the Texas State Boardof Pharmacy as a preceptor.

ThePharmacy Intern program is designed as a threeyear longitudinalexperience while the student progresses in an ACPEaccredited Doctorof Pharmacy (PharmD) program.

Student pharmacists enrolled in anACPEaccredited PharmD program are eligible for entry into theprogram when they have completed the first semester of their firstyear (P1).

PEOPLEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Promotesa positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic teamfocused work unit that actively helps one another to achieveoptimal department results.

Collaborates with other health careprofessionals as needed for problem resolution and / or achievementof identified patient specificgoals.

Proactivelysupports and assists with training new employees and all otherpharmacy learners (e.g. residents interns students andvolunteers).

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assistswith optimizing the safety and efficiency of pharmacy operationsand to support the workflow needs of the pharmacydepartment.
  • Contributes indepartmental efforts to resolve drug related problems andmaximizing patientcare.
  • Presents or assistswith inservices for pharmacy staff as directed by PharmacyManagement. Participates in workgroups committees and continuingeducation activities for technicalstaff.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performsefficient and safe medication acquisition and distributionfunctions such as but not limited to : telephone triagingrepackaging of medications labeling medications charging / creditingof medications compounding medications and inventorying ofmedications.
  • Providessupport to the workflow and reports any problems to the appropriateparties. Accurately documents and completes paperwork for theassignedrole / function.

  • Usesresources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Recommendssolutions in achieving departmentalobjectives.
  • Selfmotivatedto independently manage time effectively and prioritize dailytasks.

  • Suggests / Promotes / Participatesin improvements to workflow in coordination with the PharmacyManager / Pharmacy Intern ProgramCoordinator.
  • Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continual development as a PharmacyIntern.
