POSITION SUMMARY

At the direction of the inpatient rehab manager, the primary role of a mobility aide is to provide and assist in the daily mobilization of hospitalized patients within on each unit.

This is accomplished through the following job responsibilities :

o Completing or assisting others in the daily activity and mobility of patients.

o Assisting nursing staff in the daily mobility of patients.

o Creating mobility reports and distributing them within the unit.

o Assist with the retrieval and upkeep of safe patient handling equipment as needed.

o The prioritizing of patients that have the greatest need for activity or mobility.

o Collaboration with rehabilitation services to address difficult to move patients.

o Providing exercise opportunities for patients to complete when appropriate.

o Collecting and reporting on patient mobility data.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Previous experience working in a hospital or healthcare setting is preferred.

CERTIFICATION / LICENSURE

Current BLS certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments and endure periods of elevated stress.

Strong organizational skills.

Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to be flexible, organized, and function as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to engage in a team and motivate others.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Basic computer skills.

Experience in patient care and mobility is preferred.

ESSENTIAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In collaboration with the patient care team, the inpatient rehab manager and / or designee supervises the patient mobility aide to meet the daily mobility needs of the patients within the scope of the role.

The mobility aide will :

o independently provide direct patient mobility activities or help provide direct patient mobility to safely mobilize patients in the acute care hospital setting,

o provide individualized activity and mobility interventions for patients according to their individualized mobility plan, determined in collaboration with the nursing and rehabilitation teams,

o successfully complete and maintain competencies in role-specific skills, such as safe patient handling equipment, safe mobility techniques and workflow, and the proper use of exercise and clinical tools,

o serve in the role of a mobility resource and advocate to support and engage the entire unit in the safe mobility of all patients,

o use, maintain, and organize the supply of all safe patient handing equipment and mobility related devices on the unit,

o encourages a culture of positivity and enthusiasm related to mobility by demonstrating a positive attitude and an ability to work with others to ensure patient satisfaction, staff engagement, and continuous quality improvement, and

o be required to perform secondary duties of lesser, equal, or greater levels of responsibility should the need arise.

POSITION IMPORTANCE AND GOALS

This dedicated role increases the quantity and frequency of patients receiving early, frequent activity and mobility, with a focus on decreasing immobility harm and supporting the functional and medical well-being of all hospitalized patients.

Outcomes of the role will include improved overall patient experience, patient outcomes, and reduced length of stay while decreasing medical complications and acuity of hospitalized patients.

While the mobility aide will be assigned to the rehabilitation department and report to the acute care rehabilitation manager, the mobility aide will collaborate with nursing staff within medical and surgical patient units.
