The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) is a nonacademic, research department in the University of Arizona tasked furthering our understanding of the geology, mineral resources, and natural hazards of Arizona.
We invite applications for two Research Scientists to join our mineral resources and bedrock geology team. This is an exciting opportunity for research-oriented geologists interested in furthering our understanding of critical minerals.
The successful candidate will contribute expertise in one or more of the following subdisciplines : economic geology, igneous / metamorphic petrology, physical volcanology, stratigraphy / sedimentology, geochemistry, or regional geology.
One position will be focused principally on research activities centered around mine waste and tailings place to better document the distribution and quantities of mine waste and tailing sites across Arizona, as well as characterize the metal and critical mineral contents of these sites for potential future reprocessing.
The second position will lead a compilation project of geochronologic data across Arizona, sample and characterize critical mineral occurrences throughout the state, and contribute to a synthesis of the mineral resources of Cochise County.
There are several other active mineral resource projects in place that exact assignments will depend on the expertise, background, and interest of the successful candidates.
Key technical skills for a successful candidate include the ability to conduct geologic mapping of prospects to mining districts, interpret diverse datasets such borehole data, geo / thermochronologic results, and geochemistry, and synthesize information in a GIS environment.
The successful candidate will be a scientist who has strong interpersonal skills, can work collaboratively, and can communicate their science effectively with other researchers, public and private stakeholders, and members of the public to further our understanding of Arizona’s natural resources.
AZGS staff scientists are expected to participate in AZGS field investigations, develop and write proposals, and conduct office-based data compilations, that will lead to the production of high-quality datasets, maps, reports, scientific papers, and presentations.

Duties & Responsibilities
Primary duties and responsibilitiesinclude, but are not limited to :
- Contribute to and lead scientific projects relating to mineral resources and bedrock geology that complement AZGS's mission
- Conduct fieldwork to accomplish scientific tasks in support of projects
- Author peer-reviewed scientific papers and governmental reports
- Develop and foster collaborative relationships with AZGS scientists, UA researchers, private-sector industries, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, AZ tribes, and other academic institutions
- Conceive and write proposals for external funding with internal and external partners
- Ability to communicate with staff of varying technical knowledge and with non-scientific stakeholders
- Strong written communication and analytical skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Geology or related field AND minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University .
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in southwestern North America geology
- Experience conducting independent geologic mapping and fieldwork
