I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary :

The George Washington University Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) Division is seeking a Director, Volunteer Leadership Engagement for Health and Medicine.

DAR is responsible for leading the university’s external constituent and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends.

Our goal is to advance GWs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care. The Director, Volunteer Leadership Engagement for Health and Medicine is a key leadership position within the Health and Medicine Development Team, which represents the Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences, Nursing and Public Health, and the DAR’s Volunteer Engagement team.

This position works in close partnership with the Associate Vice President of Development, Health & Medicine, and the university’s Executive Director of Volunteer Leadership Engagement to reshape and build leadership volunteer structure and volunteerism within the Health and Medicine enterprise including building strong volunteer councils with members who have influence and affluence.

These efforts are an integral component to achieving aspirational fundraising goals and strengthening the pipeline for the university’s next comprehensive campaign.

As members of the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), we all work together to advance its mission to serve all constituencies of the university through alumni, grateful patient and donor engagement.

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President and Chief Development Officer, Health & Medicine, with strong coordination and cooperation with the Executive Director of Volunteer Leadership this position :

  • Creates strong volunteer leadership structures for Health and Medicine that incorporates volunteer council operating best practices including-updated volunteer leadership descriptions, regular council communications, 100% philanthropic giving, volunteer leadership recruitment, developing strategic agendas, maintaining volunteer information in DAR’s CRM volunteer records.
  • Partners closely with Associate Vice President, council leads and other members of DAR to support collaboration and coordination with various university stakeholders (deans, directors, vice presidents, advancement staff, alumni, friends, and donors) to create and maintain a vision for the overall strategy to deepen, integrate and align volunteer leaders to the university’s strategic priorities.
  • Will develop, implement and evaluate a consistent volunteer experience across the councils affiliated with the Schools of Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences, Nursing and Public Health.

Creates, documents, and maintains processes to ensure consistent experience, meetings, and communications amongst the Councils.

In partnership with the Associate Vice President and council managers, and school deans, creates consistent volunteer experience across the councils affiliated with the Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences, Nursing and Public Health.

This includes consistent nomination and selection processes, onboarding experiences and evaluation processes at the end of each volunteer’s term.

Create a consistent experience for Council chairs.

  • Maintains a list of prospective council candidates for each school, pulling from a range of constituents, including alumni, grateful patients, corporation and foundation representatives and community members
  • In partnership with the Associate Vice President, council managers, and school deans, works to plan and execute Council meetings.

Develops meeting and working group agendas and helps recruit speakers. Partners with the schools to provide updates to council on impact of the council’s efforts.

Creates, executes, and manages stewardship and engagement strategies across the councils affiliated with the Schools of Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences, Nursing and Public Health.

Creates a communications plan to update council members in between meetings

  • Partners with appropriate colleagues to develop and convey messaging and requests time from senior leaders for council meetings.
  • Partners with Associate Vice President, council leads and Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving to achieve for 100% council giving.
  • Develops and manages effective volunteer (and micro-volunteer) engagement and recognition opportunities to complement DAR’s and school priorities and goals.
  • Maintains knowledge of school and institutional fundraising priorities.
  • This role strategically and collaboratively networks within other divisions and offices across the university, developing partnerships that promote and leverage alumni and constituent engagement and annual giving programs.
  • Supports the Executive Director of Volunteer Leadership in planning and execution of GW’s annual Volunteer Leadership Summit for all volunteer groups across GW.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience and success in building effective strategies for volunteer engagement in support of university priorities and campaign goals.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications :

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant experience.

Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications :

Progressive experience (four to six years) in institutional advancement in higher education, preferably in complex academic and research institutions.

Exceptional communication skills and outstanding writing competences with an attention to details. Desire and ability to work as part of a team and willingness to collaborate with stakeholders across campus.

Ability to work some evenings and weekends. Demonstrated understanding of the fields of medicine, nursing and / or public health.

Ability to travel domestically, and possibly internationally, for prospect visits and events.

  • Successful volunteer management experience
  • Knowledge and ability to devise and support thoughtfully orchestrated experiences and programs to steward and cultivate donors.
  • Expertise in organizing, planning, and executing complex experiences in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently; able to execute existing projects while managing and responding to urgent opportunities.

Hiring Range

$120,862.67 - $169,137.25
