The Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UCSB is seeking an Assistant Director. The Assistant Director (AD) manages programs that have a critical impact upon the organization.

The person in this role will have significant responsibility for formulating and administering policies and programs, will manage significant human, financial, and physical resources, and will function with a very high degree of autonomy.

They will oversee through subordinate employees the accountability and stewardship of department resources and the development of systems and procedures to protect organizational assets.

The Assistant Director is responsible for assessing, analyzing, and implementing the mission and creative vision of the Museum as defined by the Director.

They work collaboratively with the Director and are responsible for carrying out the institutional mission by overseeing and leading department heads at the Museum to achieve stated goals.

The Assistant Director develops and implements a roster of exhibitions and educational programs which explore issues in art, architecture and design but also relate to the broader teaching goals of the University and ensure the continued success, reach and impact of the Museum.

As a scholar, educator, and advocate who is passionate about art and its role in collegiate and community life, the Assistant Director elevates the Museum’s engagement with both the UCSB campus community as well as that of neighboring Goleta and Santa Barbara.

As a community builder, the Assistant Director fosters a welcome, collegial, and highly collaborative environment for students, faculty, and staff, contributing to productive workflows and the flourishing of ideas.

Additionally, the successful candidate will hold an adaptive leadership role, actively participating in shaping the Museum environment to advance equity and strengthen institutional capabilities.

They will perform their duties with a demonstrated commitment to accessibility and inclusion, collaboration, and interdisciplinarity.

The Assistant Director is tasked with defining the standards for exhibitions, educational and public programs, and continually reviews, interprets, and evaluates programs and objectives in light of the mission of the Museum and University.

In consultation with the Director, the Assistant Director provides strategic leadership, oversight and management of multiple departments at the Museum.

This involves creating and establishing policies and procedures for day-to-day museum operations and the Museum’s multi-platform programs, all the while maintaining recognized professional standards.

The successful candidate will assist the Director with overseeing and managing aspects of operations related to creative programming, collection stewardship, educational initiatives, installation, design and outreach.

They will be in charge of allocating and administering resources as well as managing the resultant budgets. Individual department heads report directly to this position.

Required Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in museum practice.
  • 1-3 years experience in, and knowledge of collections stewardship / building, exhibition development, and conservation / preservation.
  • 1-3 years managing staff, schedules and budgets.
  • 1-3 years curatorial experience.
  • Knowledge of curatorial practices and current trends.
  • Knowledgeable of current issues facing the curatorial and art museum administration fields.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in museum practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of managing staff, and functioning in a leadership role.
  • Ability to take a long-range approach in regard to relevant museum programming, exhibits, and strategic planning.
  • Broad-based knowledge of organizational administration.
  • Knowledge of facilities and office management.
  • Knowledge of financial management and budget development.
  • Solid knowledge of project management.
  • Knowledge of museum programming.
  • Strong knowledge of donor development.
  • Skills in scholarly research and in writing scholarly publications.
  • Possess public speaking expertise.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

Specialization in Latin American or Asian American art preferred.

Pay Rate / Range : $91,300 $105,000 / yr. Salary commensurate with experience and internal equity

Working Days and Hours : M-F, 8 : 00 am 5 : 00 pm, some weekends
