Under the direct supervision of the Food Services Director and / or the Dietary Supervisor, the Cook will prepare, season and cook therapeutic diets for patients and regular cuisine for employees and physicians.
Observes hospital and department infection control policies and procedures and established standards for food handling. Maintains the cleanliness of department in a safe, sanitary, orderly manner in accordance with standard procedures of the department.
Oversees and ensures accuracy of patient tray assembly and service to patients. Ensures temperatures are taken at least 15 minutes before service times and that meals are ready at specified times.
Demonstrates sound judgment concerning product appearance and taste. Identifies and resolves issues related to food quality and service.
Reviews weekly menus to determine type and amount of food needed to meet hospital needs and communicates information to supervisor.
Consults with Dietary Supervisor regarding use of leftovers.
Reconciles incoming merchandise against invoice and reports shortages or missing items. Ensures merchandise is stored appropriately, observing FIFO system.
Ensures perishables and meat items are covered, dated, and labeled when received. Ensures refrigerators and freezer are organized and sanitary.
- Maintains high levels of sanitation in department. Ensures that all hygiene, safety and sanitation policies and procedures are followed and that work areas are kept clean, using appropriate sanitation procedures and proper cleaning supplies.
- Takes conscious ownership for work and takes a proactive, deliberate, and thoughtful approach regarding work activities.
Demonstrates appropriate use of independent judgement and decision making. Demonstrates excellent customer service at all times.
Reports errors, inefficiencies and inaccuracies to management with suggestions for improvement.
Required Qualifications :
- One year as a cook in an acute care hospital
- Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
- Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card within 30 days of hire date (Los Angeles City Employees only)
Preferred Qualifications :
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Bilingual skills
