SALARY RANGE : $58,537.00 - $90,866.00 Annually

EDUCATION ACCREDITATION : Applicant’s education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency.

ELIGIBILITY : Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK : Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.

PROBATION : All persons, including current City employees , selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

A Mechanical Maintenance Technician III operates a variety of hand tools and machine shop equipment in the installation and maintenance and repair of mechanical components such as boilers, filters, pumps, compressors, hydraulic and pneumatic valves in a water or waste water treatment plant or pumping station and provides work direction to lower level technicians.

Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek, subject to 24-hour callback for emergencies.

Work is performed in a machine shop or in a water or waste water treatment plant or pumping station where there may be occasional exposure to chemicals, dust and fumes, extremes of heat and cold, moving equipment and noxious odors.

Work requires moderate physical exertion with occasional strenuous physical exertion in the repair of large or hard-to-reach equipment.

SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must :

EDUCATION : Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.

EXPERIENCE : Have 4 years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work.

EQUIVALENCIES : Six months of additional experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement.

Completion of one year of the required coursework in a power mechanic or machine shop curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES : A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.

A valid Maryland Class B Commercial driver's license may be required.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of mechanical equipment and related systems.
  • Skill in the techniques of handling tools, equipment and materials used in mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to detect and analyze defects in mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow plans and specifications and to instruct accordingly.
  • Ability to make simple sketches of mechanical parts or systems.
  • Ability to lead and render technical assistance to lower level technicians.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
