Communications

The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew's reputation.

The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects.

Our in-house expertise includes : strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media outreach and event;

digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources.

Position Overview

This position, which is based in Pew's Washington, D.C., office, reports directly to the senior vice president and chief communications officer (SVP / CCO) and is part of the Communications institutional and strategy team.

In addition to the senior officer's responsibilities to help chart core initiatives, the individual will also manage implementation of these efforts through the Communications department and more broadly across the organization, working collaboratively with multiple teams in the external affairs division and individuals across the organization to achieve the stated goals.

Additionally, this individual will work directly with the SVP / CCO and other senior leaders to develop ideas, craft editorial plans, and facilitate emerging opportunities or special projects as well as write and / or edit articles, and other materials as needed.

Additional responsibilities may include supporting institutional events, commentary, and media partnerships.

The position, based in Pew's Washington, DC office, will participate in Pew's core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will have flexibility to work from home the remainder of the week.

Responsibilities

Institutional Communications

  • Work with the SVP / CCO to develop communications strategies, plans, and tactics for major institutional efforts.
  • Potentially write and / or edit materials to support the creation and implementation of major products, including articles, campaign and / or institutional messages, and other documents.
  • Contribute to department's efforts to strengthen content strategy writ large by generating ideas and collaborating across teams to execute.
  • Plays a key role in overseeing the department's 3-year framework.
  • Supports Communications leadership to establish and track goals, success factors, and KPIs of strategic priorities.
  • Manages the department's status updates and final reports in collaboration with the Communications leadership team.
  • Co-creates and manages the internal communications strategy for the department.
  • Working with the SVP / CCO, researches, captures, and compiles complex data to prepare presentation materials, spreadsheets and customized reports.
  • Collaborates with other internal and external stakeholders on cross functional projects. Accomplishes project goals closely working with peers throughout the organization.

Coordination

  • Manages regular reporting systems to keep colleagues across the organization updated on priority project developments and potential communications challenges, enhancing team alignment.
  • Contributes to the management of communications calendars and various communications reports.
  • Assumes management responsibility of high priority projects.
  • Coordinates select departmental activities and initiatives.
  • Develops and maintains an informed awareness of relevant topics to effectively carry out all the activities listed above;

participates in special projects.

Leads and contributes to strategic communications department projects, special projects, and broader Pew-wide projects and / or committees as needed, including contributing to other communications program teams as assigned by the Senior Vice President, Communications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree desired.
  • Generally,10 years of increasingly responsible communications experience in the for-profit or non-profit sector.
  • Demonstrated strategic communications experience.
  • Experience in communications planning and media outreach, including demonstrated experience developing short- and long-term communications plans that involve multiple audiences, goals, and tactics.

Demonstrated results from implementation of plans.

Demonstrated experienced working with senior-level executives to provide counsel, guidance and direction on communications initiatives and programs.

Seasoned judgment, able to make decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive and clear with colleagues.

  • Ability to be flexible, creative, and assume accountability for all areas of responsibility.
  • Superior oral and written communications skills. Proven experience drafting and editing communication materials, articles, or other public documents, including op-eds.
  • Outstanding research, information gathering and analytical skills.
  • Experience synthesizing large amounts of information and focusing on details.
  • Experience working within a creative culture that demands excellence and emphasizes teamwork. Strong interpersonal skills;

ability to develop and manage productive relationships with campaign managers, consultants, and others involved in developing or implementing the communication efforts of Pew.

Excellent listening skills. Strong diplomacy skills and experience working with and across staff at varying levels throughout the institution.

Experience setting short- and long-term planning goals in line with program priorities and institutional procedures. A task-oriented style, with a focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals.

Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Ability to develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy.

Travel

Minimal travel anticipated.

Work Authorization :

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without the need of a visa sponsorship.

Salary Range

$123,600 USD - $138,200 USD

The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pew's commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay.

The actual salary offered will take into consideration many factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity, and business need.
