GENERAL DESCRIPTION : Provide medical assessment to clients under the supervision of the Medical Director and / or Clinical Program Director.

The position is the primary medical examiner at ITS. It involves the examination and documentation of medical and clinical admission criteria and works in close coordination with other treatment team members to implement appropriate treatment regimens for clients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Must have licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant through the Arizona Board of Nursing or the Arizona Board of Medical Examiners respectively.

Must have a current DEA number and obtain and maintain a DEA X waiver and experience in prescribing / administering Schedule II narcotics.

Should have a desire to work with substance abusing and / or dependent clients. Privileged / credentialed through AHCCCS and TriWest.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : This position may require duties including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling more than 100 pounds, and requires frequent standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching.

Good visual and auditory acuity as well as good manual dexterity and the ability to be readily understood are essential.

Must be able to work in a stressful environment and be able to respond to emergencies. May be exposed to biohazards and chemicals per Safety policies including hazardous waste and infection control.

REPORTING SUPERVISOR : Director of Operations with oversight of the Medical Director

JOB RELATED FUNCTIONS :

  • Demonstrates competency in the performance of job-related functions
  • Performs and documents history and physical on all new clients. Physicals include taking and recording vital signs; drawing blood;

recognizing and recording withdrawal symptoms; and interviewing clients and recording medical and substance history

Appropriately documents rationale for initial dose, changes, and other client consults and education.

Make initial dose recommendation in consultation with Medical Director or Clinical Program Physician

Educates clients regarding medication side effects, interactions, contraindications, and safety precautions when transporting and storing medication in the home.

Educates clients about sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex practices, and safe needle usage

Educates clients about Hepatitis A, B, and C, TB, HIV and makes appropriate referrals for testing and treatment

Refer clients to healthcare services as indicated

Referral and monitoring of pregnant clients for the proper coordination of care with specialists or primary care physician / OB specialist

Conducts annual medical assessments and TB testing updates for clients

Consults with clients and physicians regarding medication tapering and withdrawal

Maintains current knowledge of community resources to assist clients in the areas of medical and dental treatment.

Performs other related duties to support the scope of services

  • Follows guidelines for the use of Personal Protection Equipment
