Research Professional II (Multiple Positions) Posting Number req19645 Department Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Department Website Link Location Main Campus Address Tucson, AZ USA Position Highlights The Worobey laboratory in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is seeking a Research Professional II who will be responsible for research activities that support the overall mission of the Worobey lab, including working with pathogens like SARS-CoV-2.

Modern molecular biology techniques required, such as PCR, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, various sequencing approaches, ELISA, etc.

In addition, they will assist with other duties required for smooth running of the lab, including ordering supplies, training new personnel in basic bench techniques, and administering lab safety programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work independently on defined experiments (, set up, scheduling, data acquisition) and report on the findings to the PI.
  • Have a general understanding of the research lab's mission.
  • Process human, animal, and environmental samples (blood, saliva, wastewater) for scientific studies.
  • Prioritize own workload, managing multiple priorities to defined deadlines.
  • Writing and assisting PI with manuscripts, specifically related to methods / results / figure generation.
  • Oversee day to day lab operations.
  • Participate in lab meetings and / or other seminars / meetings.
  • Ensure lab is clean and tidy.
  • Place orders for materials and supplies, negotiating with vendors, and cost analysis of research projects.
  • Work with the EEB business office to ensure laboratory expenses are being appropriately charged to sponsored accounts and track expenses levels to ensure research expenses stay within awarded budgets.
  • Monitor inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Administer lab safety programs and train and monitor laboratory members needed to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations;

Set environmental health and safety standards and policy; oversee and maintain documentation of safety standard operating procedures.

  • Serve as a source of knowledge and provide training laboratory procedures.
  • Manage and prepare laboratory for yearly inspections for biosafety and other regulatory review processes.
  • Order laboratory reagents, specialized primers, and other unique reagents for experiments based on grant guidelines and experimental data.
  • Serve as a representative of Worobey lab, interacting with Faculty, lab and administrative staff, students, internal and external collaborators, post-doctoral fellows and outside vendors.
  • Receive calls after routine work hours from post-doctoral fellows with questions or lab emergencies.
  • Respond to off hours calls related to equipment malfunction and potentially be required to report to work to address such issues outside of standard workday.

Special skills : Phage display, diagnostics development, particularly lateral flow immunoassays and microfluidics, flow cytometry, therapeutics development, particularly monoclonal antibodies, cell culture and virology techniques.

AdditionalRequirements :

  • Must adhere to guidelines regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential patient information.
  • Employee will be required to complete specific training related to HIPAA, human subjects research, biosafety, and other specified training courses as the position requires.
  • Understands the importance / impact of data integrity in terms of patients, study results, costs, quality of service and scientific research in general.
  • Regular contact with physicians, collaborators, vendors, and administrative personnel and patients requires the use of good judgment, tact and sensitivity.
  • Basic knowledge of operating a personal computer to access email, utilize electronic calendar systems and databases, and use of basic computer software (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Adobe).
  • Prior knowledge or willingness to learn how to use Hopkins based systems such as EPIC, CRMS, etc. that are integral pieces of the medical and medical research enterprise at JHMI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with PC related software, printers, copiers and scanners.
