We are seeking a qualified Marine Protected Species Biologist to support the Boston-based Offshore Energy team.

The successful candidate will be involved in impact assessment, permitting support, marine survey compliance, and data management / reporting for marine mammal and offshore permitting programs.

This role will focus on a variety of commercial, federal, and state clients, particularly in offshore energy projects such as wind, oil & gas, and other marine infrastructure developments.

Location : Multiple potential office locations, including Boston, MA; Rockland, MA; Portland, ME; Parsippany, NJ; Richmond, VA;

Norfolk, VA; Portland, OR; Irvine, CA; San Diego, CA. Remote work options are also available.

Your Role :

  • Serve as the SME for impact assessment, permitting, and monitoring associated with offshore energy projects.
  • Routine coordination with project teams, including Project Managers, Team Leaders, Subcontractors, other SMEs, and Client Representatives.
  • Perform desktop-based data analysis, impact assessments, and report writing. Integrate underwater acoustic modeling results into permit applications, reports, and other documentation.
  • Develop incidental take permits for various offshore activities.
  • Stay current with shifting federal guidance and best available science regarding noise pollution and marine mammals.
  • Implement standard QA / QC processes as part of data management.
  • Ensure compliance with protected species monitoring programs.
  • Participate in other environmental program assessments within the company.

Qualifications :

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in marine science (M.S. preferred).
  • 1-3 years' experience as an SME on impact assessment, permitting, and reporting tasks.
  • Experience developing Letter of Authorization (LOA) and Incidental Hazard Assessment (IHA) documents for agency consultation under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).
  • Familiarity with marine bioacoustics modeling principles and noise pollution impacts.
  • Deep understanding of marine protected species resources, policies, and regulations.
  • Familiarity with methods for monitoring marine protected species and designing and implementing marine surveys.
  • Basic understanding of marine spatial planning, NEPA, Endangered Species Act (ESA), MMPA, and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) offshore wind survey recommendations.
  • Excellent writing skills for communicating complex scientific information.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and underwater acoustic modeling software applications is preferred.
  • Flexibility to travel and meet fast-paced project requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Professional demeanor in all aspects of work.
  • A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with federal regulations is required, along with a physical if needed.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
