The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Experienced Services Program (ESP) was established to create a unique partnership to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies.
The USGS ESP connects experienced workers (age 55+) to provide scientific, technical, and administrative services in support of the USGS mission.
The experienced workers participating in the ESP are referred to as ?enrollees? and are not employees of USGS or National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions).
NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the ESP, and the enrollees work under USGS direction based on the functions in this job description.
USGS ESP enrollees benefit from the opportunity to mentor and to engage in gainful project-based work, and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy and their own financial security.
A background security investigation may be required prior to start date. Location, hours and hourly pay are noted in this position description.
USGS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary support with this position being funded for approximately 960 hours at 40 hours per week.
this is subject to change based on budget and other factors). This position is primarily to work onsite at the Earthquake Science Center Office, with the flexibility to telework one day per week.
Qualifications :
Minimum of 15 year(s) of experience in working with active-and passive-source seismic data and acquisition OR MA / MS Degree in Geology and Geophysics
Knowledge and experience using explosives for seismic data acquisition. Experience in modeling seismic refraction data.
Experience in paleoseismic trenching.
- Experience required with Windows, Apple Macintosh, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, ARCVIEW (GIS), MS SharePoint, MS Teams, MS Outlook, Adobe
- Seismic processing software (such as ProMax); some experience with Unix Operating
Duties :
Catalog, evaluate, sort, and move a large volume of the Earthquake Science Center's (ESC) Seismic, paleoseismic, and related equipment.
Responsible for maintenance of equipment and vehicles. Acquire, model, and interpret active-source (refraction, reflection, surface-wave) and passive-source (earthquake, ambient noise) seismic data.
Prepare reports on findings of active-source seismic data.
- Catalog, evaluate, and sort seismic and paleoseismic equipment 30%
- Move equipment to Moffett Field or arrange equipment for surplus 30%
- Acquire, model, and interpret seismic data 30%
- Assist with maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles. 10%
Other :
Travel Requirements : Emergency response fieldwork travel related to large and moderate earthquakes extending days to weeks.
Fieldwork related to acquisition of active-source seismic data extending days to weeks
- Overnight travel : Less than 1 week for most months but could be several weeks for emergency response.
- Air travel anticipated : Up to two days per month.
- Rental cars : Less than 1 week for most months but could be several weeks for emergency response.
- Government Vehicle Training : Defense driving
- Health and Safety Considerations : First Aid and CPR training. If incumbent has had one or more training courses in the last 10 years, it will be sufficient.
- Required Safety Gear : Long-sleeve shirts, long pants, hats, and hiking boots. All other equipment provided by USGS.
