JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS :
The Attention and Behavior Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health seeks Advanced Counselors to assist with our Summer Treatment Program (STP) for children with attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other behavioral challenges.
The STP is an evidence-based treatment program for 7 year-old children with ADHD that is implemented in a summer day camp setting.
It is the only evidence-based, therapeutic summer setting designed specifically for children with ADHD in central Pennsylvania.
The Penn State STP is supported by the Philanthropic efforts of the Children’s Miracle Network, which allows the families in greatest need to participate regardless of their income level.
Over % of parents who enrolled their child in a previous Penn State STP rated the program more effective than other services their children received.
During this time, the Penn State STP has also housed several translational research studies examining the roles of reward learning, cognitive control, motivation, and other domains on the functioning of children with ADHD.
The STP has strong research supporting its positive effects on the serious behavioral, social, and academic difficulties exhibited by children with attention and behavior problems.
This opening is typically filled by undergraduate or graduate students majoring in psychology, social work, education, or related fields.
Advanced Counselors and Counselors work together in groups of 4 to 5 to implement treatment for children with ADHD. Advanced Counselors implement behavior modification during typical recreational activities (e.
g., soccer, softball, basketball) and provide children with social skills and problem-solving training. Advanced Counselors also plan activities and help to design and implement treatment modifications to meet the needs of individual children.
All procedures are outlined in a program manual. All Advanced Counselors will be supervised by Ph.D., M.S., and M.D.-level faculty at Penn State University and receive instruction in various evidence-based behavioral interventions for children with ADHD and a range of comorbidities.
Many previous Counselors have gone on to earn advanced degrees in psychology and related fields.
This is a -hour-per-week opening ( Monday-Friday ), typically from 8 : a.m. until 5 : p.m. , with two -minute unpaid daily breaks.
Pay is $ per hour. The work location is TBD but will be near Hershey, PA.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Staff must have access to transportation, but carpooling may be coordinated amongst employees.
- Mandatory training takes place one week before camp, with additional training required on your own before starting.
- Counselors are responsible for their housing, but the STP coordinator can assist with housing referrals.
- Advanced Counselors are required to have some undergraduate education as well as previous STP experience.
- All Counselors will participate in training from approximately June , 4 to June , 4 , with the possibility of extra training on Saturday, June , 4 .
- The STP will run from June , 4 through July , 4 , with June th and July 4th as unpaid holidays. Advanced Counselors must be available on all of these dates.
