SMUD is seeking an outgoing and technical individual to help commercial and industrial customers "Go Electric" by supporting customer projects to convert gas fired equipment to efficient electric equipment.

Emphasis will be around calculations of customer energy usage to validate energy savings. Qualified candidates will be expected to be in the field with ability to physically inspect customer mechanical and electrical equipment.

Purpose

Under general direction, creates mutually beneficial customer relationships, analyzes customers' energy needs and provides high quality and cost effective solutions;

markets green energy / renewable products and services, promotes energy conservation awareness, performs comprehensive energy audits and inspections of commercial and residential structures, and generates revenue for SMUD through marketing products and services.

Nature and Scope

Serves as a journey level resource working independently on relevant work and projects of minor to moderate complexity. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

Acts as the primary point of contact for all commercial customers' (primarily middle account customers) within assigned industry segment.

Identifies customers' needs and issues, and develops strategies to meet these needs. Educates customers about new products and services, rate options, and other offerings.

Fields questions from commercial customers with respect to the full spectrum of energy service delivery including technical and administrative service delivery.

Makes recommendations to customers regarding products and services that will be most beneficial and applicable to their individual situations.

To provide exceptional customer service within assigned industry segment.

  • Conducts comprehensive energy audits and inspections on commercial and residential facilities, public buildings, schools, hospitals, and industrial plants;
  • uses technical expertise to advise customers on mechanical, HVAC, electrical, lighting, motors, control systems and industrial equipment;

researches technical data, analyzes alternatives, conducts cost-benefit studies, and provides formal recommendations (technical and financial) to customers.

To provide value-added technical and financial recommendations to customers for energy efficiency methods, practices, and equipment.

Develops marketing strategies and materials, and provides value-added recommendations to customers within assigned industry segment to ensure that energy efficiency and other program goals are met.

To effectively market SMUD programs and services to meet program goals.

Assists in the development of new policies and programs in response to commercial account customer (primarily middle account customers) needs by recommending improved policies and services and implementing policy and / or program innovations and approaches to non-traditional energy service issues necessary to provide responsive, individualized service to customers.

To provide exceptional customer service by providing customer-sensitive policies and programs.

Participates in professional associations and community organizations to increase technical energy knowledge and to market new products and services.

To network within the technical and local communities to market customer beneficial products and services.

  • Presents energy related case studies, proposals, cost estimates to management, customers and the public. To provide decision makers with comprehensive recommendations regarding energy efficiency matters and issues.

Required Education

High School diploma or equivalent

Required Experience Qualifications

Typically three(3+) or more years of progressively responsible and relevant work experience in technical energy auditing and analysis to include comprehensive field energy audits of commercial structures.

At the journey level, must also have experience in customer account management, marketing and selling products and services to customers and making formal, influential public presentations to customers and the public.

Required Licenses / Certificates

A valid class C Drivers license is required.

Knowledge Of

  • Customer service methods and techniques; customer relationship development strategies; energy conservation practices, procedures, and systems for residential and commercial structures;
  • electrical principles and practices; energy auditing methods and practices; marketing and sales techniques; customers business and decision making process;
  • marketing strategy and tactics, effective sales techniques, electric utility rate making practices and procedures; energy management applications and programs and electric distribution systems;

electric system operations; techniques of negotiation and persuasion; techniques and methods of financial evaluation; utility deregulation initiatives and utility competition.

Skills To

  • Build and maintain successful customer relationships; identify and articulate market and customer requirements; conceptualize innovative and practical solutions to customer issues;
  • develop sales and marketing proposals responding to customer needs; listen effectively to identify opportunities and solutions;
  • deliver formal presentations to customers and the public; perform comprehensive on-site energy audits on residential and commercial structures;

evaluate energy consumption including by use of computer modeling software, calculate energy savings and rebate amounts through math computations, provide value-added recommendations to customers, research energy efficiency methods, practices, and equipment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Commercial mechanical design principles
  • Licensed P.E.
  • Experience with heat pump technology
  • Experience creating energy modeling and validating customer energy calculations
  • Commercial or industrial outside sales experience including account management
  • Experience with commercial or industrial equipment (for example, HVAC, refrigeration, water heating, central plants, or industrial process equipment)
  • Experience analyzing energy consumption of common commercial equipment
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical trade networks
  • Familiarity with California Building Code
  • Experience in Title 24 requirements
  • Project Management Experience
