Requirements :

Home Infusion Therapy :

• Home infusion therapy involves administering IV, IM, SC medications and fluids to patients in their own homes and Ambulatory Infusion Centers.
• Common scenarios for home infusion include delivering antimicrobials, hydration solutions, parenteral nutrition teachings, antineoplastic IM / SC drugs, analgesics, immunoglobulins, and other drugs.

Safety and Education :

• Patient Selection - LVNs must carefully collect patient’s data suitable for home infusion and blood withdrawal. Factors include the patient’s overall health, ability to participate in care, and home environment.
• Education - LVNs need specialized education and certification in IV therapy and blood withdrawal, including competency assessment.
• Policies and Procedures - Home care organizations should have up-to-date, evidence-based policies and procedures for safe IV therapy.
• Monitoring - LVNs must closely monitor patients for potential complications related to vascular access and infusion, IM / SC medications.

IV Therapy Certification :

• LVNs can pursue specialized certification in IV therapy.
• For example, the LVN IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal Certification offered by BVNPT the focuses on IV techniques, medication administration, and safety protocols.
• LVNs with this certification work in various healthcare settings, including home care.

Additional Responsibilities :

• Starts peripheral intravenous line for IV fluids and medication infusion.
• Observes and collect patient’s data, condition, charting and reporting changes in conditions such as adverse reactions to medication or treatment and takes necessary actions per protocol.
• Answers patients’ calls and determines how to assist them.
• Measures and records patients’ vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, level of consciousness and pain level.
• Provides basic patient care or treatments such as wound dressings, measurements and monitoring healing process.
• Works as part of a health care team to document patient needs, plans and modifies care, and implements interventions per Nursing Care Plan.
• Evaluates nursing intervention outcomes, conferring with the health care team members.
• Preparation of supplies and equipment for PIV placement, IV, IM and SC medication administration.
• Records response to treatments provided.

Skills / Abilities :

• General knowledge of nursing and health care terminology.
• Excellent patient care skills.
• Able to pass and complete CSP Orientation and Competency Skills Checklist
• License Vocational Nursing from CA Board of Vocational Nurses
• IV and Blood Withdrawal Certification

Physical Requirements :

• Prolonged periods of sitting, working on a desktop, iPad, or phone
• May require prolonged periods of standing, moving and bending.
• Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds with Body Mechanics.
