Sr Surgical Technologist - OR Services - Surgery - Days -Full-Time

At Houston Methodist the Sr SurgicalTechnologist position requires proficient knowledge and skillsnecessary to carry out delegated tasks associated with the safe andefficient operating room support functions and related procedures.

This position works independently exercising sound judgement andreports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse orsurgeon.

In addition to performing the duties and responsibilitiesof a Surgical Technologist the Sr Surgical Technologist positionprovides mentoring and guidance for Surgical Technologist positionsutilizing skills and knowledge helping to train and orient others.

This position is responsible for assigned nonnursing functions andpractices relationshipcentered care in concert with HoustonMethodist values.

Other duties for the Sr Surgical Technologistposition will include general patient care and department upkeep asdelegated by licensed personnel.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Preparesthe operating room equipment and supplies for the next patient.Anticipates additional instrumentation equipment and supplies forusage during the procedure before surgeon scrubs.

Maintains andaccurately communicates updates for surgeon preference cards withinthe applicable serviceline.

• Anticipates theneeds of the surgeon and nursing staff by passing instruments andsupplies for surgical procedures performing competently the role ofthe surgical technologist in the provision of surgical assistanceduring a variety of surgical procedures including but not limitedto : orthopedics gynecology general ENT ophthalmology urology CVspine neurology oral / maxillofacial and minimally invasiveprocedures.
• Assists thecirculating RN with sponge instrument needle and other surgicalcounts.
• Role modelsbehaviors and skills through peertopeer accountability towardsimproving department score for patientsatisfaction.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Maintains higheststandard of sterile technique during pre and post procedures.Prepares sterile dressings and / or immobilization devices.

Cleansand prepares instruments for terminal sterilization followingsurgical procedure. Assists other members of the team with terminalcleaning of theroom.

• Assists withimplementation and teaching of departmentbased safety initiativesand standards of practice. Problemsolves and manages multipleongoing priorities with minimalsupervision.
• Participatesin debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure qualitypatient care. Initiates corrective actions and improvementactivities towards improving department and hospital quality andsafety targets reporting near misses and collaborating with theinterprofessional healthcareteam.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Maintainsefficient use of surgical supplies and minimizes opening ofsupplies until confirmation that will be used during surgery.

Makesrecommendations for cost containment duringcases.

Selfmotivated toindependently manage time effectively minimizing incidentalovertime and prioritize daily tasks. Utilizes time between heavyworkloads efficiently and helps other teammembers.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identifies andpresents areas for innovation efficiency and improvement fordepartment projects and shared governance activities.

May cochair aunitbased Shared GovernanceCouncil.

• Acts as resourcein surgical technology for the department on other hospitalcommittees. Participates in one department or hospital committee orsubcommittee and facilitates the accomplishment of the goals of thecommittee orsubcommittee.
• Proactivelyseeks opportunities to enhance knowledge and learning towardsexpertise in competencies with a focus on continual development.

Completes and updates the My Development plan on an ongoingbasis.

EDUCATION

• HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)
• Successfulcompletion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or militarytraining equivalency

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

• BLS Basic LifeSupport (AHA) AND
• CSACertified Surgical Assistant (NCCSA) Certification by the SurgicalTechnologist Association OR
• TSC Technologist inSurgeryCertified (NCCT) National Center for Competency Testing(NCCT) OR
• CST CertifiedSurgical Technologist (NBSTSA) the National Board of SurgicalTechnology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR
• GRNDF SurgicalTechnologist Met Grandfather Clause (Bill 643) or meet theGrandfather clause (Bill 643). This bill includes an extensivegrandfather clause exempting all individuals employed to practicesurgical technology in a health care facility before Sept.

1 2009.The clarification notes that legislation does not state employed onSept. 1 2009 but rather before that date. A surgical technologistwho was employed before SB1239 Sec 259.
