Position Summary :
Responsible for performing routine tests in blood bank, serology-urinalysis, coagulation, chemistry, hematology, and microbiology sections of the laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Performs high quality laboratory tests with speed and accuracy and records results.
- Performs proper quality control measures.
- Conducts proper operation of the equipment necessary for performance of the procedures assigned.
- Assists in the practical training of MLT students and new employees at the request of the technical specialist.
- Notifies physician or designated nurse when panic values are observed in testing.
- Exercises use of cost-conscious methods as set forth by the technical specialist (punctuality, use of time and supplies).
- Collects blood specimens as necessary using established techniques for the various age groups encountered.
- NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Departmental maintenance and other duties as assigned.
- HEALTH / SAFETY / COMPETENCE : Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customers, responding appropriately in emergency situations.
Must display good body mechanics when lifting and understand chemical, biological, and electrical safety in the laboratory.
Must be familiar with the concept of blood borne pathogens and wear or use the appropriate safety items that are provided while performing duties.
Must demonstrate competency of the unit specific functions described in the performance continuum, skill lists and / or standards.
Qualifications
EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS :
Must have an Associate Degree or equivalent. Must possess knowledge obtained by formal education, previous experience, or on-the-job-training of instruments and quality control methods for those procedures assigned.
Must possess knowledge of blood bank, hematology, serology, urinalysis, chemistry, and microbiology obtained by formal education.
Must possess effective communication and public relation skills.
For staff involved in the care of age-specific groups, knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients is essential.
Special knowledge is required in growth and development needs of pediatric / geriatric patients where applicable.
EXPERIENCE :
Hospital experience is preferred.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONS :
Must be licensed in the State of Tennessee as a medical Laboratory technician. Registration with American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent preferred.
