Job Description
The Medical Surgical Technician-Advanced (MST-A) is part of the transition to practice pathway at Jackson Hospital, established to decrease a known experience-competency gap in new graduate registered nurses.
Under the direction of a registered nurse (RN), the MST-A performs patient care, respiratory functions, and unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures.
The MST-A is expected to anticipate the needs of the patient within their scope of practice, collect reports and document patient data, transcribe orders, and keep the RN informed of pertinent changes in patient condition.
The MST-A will be assigned to an RN and may perform other skills as outlined in the duties and responsibilities section which are set in the Alabama Administrative Code , the Alabama Board of Nursing Standardized Procedure, and Jackson Hospital's guidelines.

Requirements
- Education : High School diploma or equivalent and be enrolled in nursing school. Other educational requirements for admission & continuation in the program include : Continued enrollment in an accredited school of nursing RN program, or have graduated from an accredited RN programCompletion of a Nursing Fundamentals courseCompletion of a Pharmacology courseA nursing GPA equivalent to a or higher on a scaleValidation of nursing skills as outlined in the duties & responsibilities section
- Licenses, Certifications and / or Registrations : BLS
- Equipment / Tools / Work Aids : Medical equipment used in the delivery of patient care; Telephone, fax, copier, personal computer and related software.
- Specialized Skills : Strong verbal and customer focused relations skills required. Ability to interact with the public.
Ability to form effective working relationships with hospital staff and patients. Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Requirements : Must be able to assist in lifting, turning, pushing, pulling and ambulating patients, and moving equipment involving a minimum of 50 pounds.
Visual and hearing acuity. Frequent walking and standing. Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate patient equipment. Ability to meet the attendance requirement of the job.
