Title

Phlebotomist - Full time, Part time and PRN BMH

The Phlebotomist performs pre-analytical or post-analytical functions in the laboratory. The job duties include specimen collection by venipuncture or capillary puncture.

They are expected to collect the correct types of specimens per instructions on the label and available reference materials.

The phlebotomist must respond to STATS and other priorities per policy and return specimens to the laboratory in an acceptable time frame.

The phlebotomist is expected to maintain regular communication with peers and charge personnel. Phlebotomists provide continual quality assurance checking for accuracy of test ordering.

Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Phlebotomist National Certification recommended
  • Proficient in the use of Mysis Laboratory information system.
  • Able to Access star for collection lists.
  • Able to independently collect specimens
  • Knowledge of basic biology, chemistry and mathematics (sufficient to measure and calculate metric quantities)
  • Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills, including verbal and written communication, problem solving and assertiveness.
  • Must have a customer service orientation providing service recovery where appropriate.
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude.
  • Must be able work in and cope with a changing environment.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility.
  • Work which produces levels of mental / visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines.

Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time. Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.

e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.

  • Patient Care
  • Perform specimen collection including venipuncture and skin puncture on patients of all ages.
  • Use the LIS for accurate order entry and cancellation of testing as appropriate.
  • Answer department telephones, contact nurses, physicians and patients where required to clarify orders or request a recollection of specimens.
  • Perform EKG’s and specialized testing that may include sweat chloride, bleeding time, NP swabs.
  • Access and process testing to be sent to reference laboratories. Release results to hospital information systems and physicians.
  • Help orient new employees to the department LIS
  • Accesses the LIS to obtain specimen requirements.
  • Looks up patient prior to draw for inpatients to determine that all testing is accounted for.
  • Provides order entry of testing into LIS Accession
  • May function as an accession technician with demonstrated competency. Required for some job assignments.
