POSITION : Certified Medication Aide (CMA)
TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR : Health and Wellbeing Director
DEPARTMENT : Resident Care
STATUS : Non-Exempt / Hourly
SUMMARY
This position administers prescribed medications and treatments under the direct supervision of the Health and Wellbeing Director.
In addition, this position will provide personal care service to the residents and perform related tasks at the community in accordance with the plan of care assigned by the Health and Wellbeing Director.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED
- Successful completion of a state approved nursing assistant training program and a state approved trained medication assistant program
- Good standing on the Georgia Certified Medication Aide Registry and have no record of being terminated for cause relating to the performance of medication aide tasks (Rule 111-8-63-.20 5a)
- Current certification in medication administration. Must be able to submit written competency test and skills check-off list prior to assuming position
- Must successfully clear a background check, TB skin test or x-ray, and health screening
- Current CPR certification
- Current certificate of training for successful completion of the five (5) hour initial fire safety training provided by the Rules and Regulations of the Georgia Safety Fire Commissioner
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administer physician ordered medication to resident's and maintain related medical records under the supervision of the Health and Wellbeing Director
- Verify identity of residents receiving medication and record name of drug, dosage, route, and time of administration on specified forms of records
- Presents medication to resident and observes ingestion or other application, or administers medication, using specified procedures
- Takes vital signs or observes residents to detect respond to specified types of medication and prepares report or notifies designed personnel of unexpected reactions
- Documents reasons prescribed drugs are not administered
- Adheres to medication administration policy
- May receive supply of ordered medications and apportion, mix, or assemble drugs for administration to resident
- May record and restock medication inventory
- Maintains Georgia state CMA requirements for assisted living communities (Rule 111-8-63-.20 5) :
5a. Good standing on Georgia CMA Registry
5b. Participates in an annual CMA skills competency check which meets the requirements contained in the standardized clinical skills competency checklist used to certify medication aides.
5c. Successful demonstration of CMA skills during quarterly observations conducted by a licensed registered professional nurse or a pharmacist
5d. Follow state CMA protocols in order for the community to maintain compliance and successful completion of quarterly drug regimen reviews conducted by a licensed pharmacist
5f. Successfully completes an annual comprehensive clinical skills competency review. The skills competency checklist is administered by a Georgia-licensed registered nurse, pharmacist or physician.
Testing includes observation and verbal testing scenarios
Under the direction of the HWD, the CMA may perform the following tasks related to the administration of medications utilizing only unit or multidose packaging of medications (Rule 111-8-63-.20 5e) :
o Administer physician ordered oral, ophthalmic, topical, otic, nasal, vaginal and rectal medications
o Administer insulin, epinephrine, and B12 pursuant to physical direction and protocol
o Administer medications via a metered dose inhaler
o Conduct finger stick blood glucose testing following established protocol
o Administer a commercially prepared disposable enema ordered by a physician
o Assist residents in the supervisor of self-administration of medications
- Provides bed bath, shower or tub bath as appropriate
- Provides appropriate care of skin, hair, nails, mouth and feet
- Provides good body alignment, positioning, and range of motion exercises for non-ambulatory residents
- Assists resident in and out of bed and with ambulation
- Assists resident with use of bedpan, urinal, commode and bathroom
- Assists with feeding and dressing resident
- Monitors and records temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure, as directed by the HWD. Significant changes in the residents' condition will be reported to the HWD immediately
- Changes simple dressings and ostomy bags
- Change Colostomy bags
- Assist with catheter cares
- Reminds and assists resident in taking pre-measured medications
- Maintains an accurate and complete record of care provided and documents observations appropriately
- Performs various housekeeping duties related to resident care
- Responsible for maintenance of electronic medical records, assuring accuracy, completeness and compliance with regulations, certification standards, legal and ethical standards
- Supports, instructs and educates the resident, family, and caregiver
- Provides personal care to the resident in a compassionate and understanding manner consistent with the Orchard philosophy
- Maintains the dignity of the resident
- Provides person-centered care across treatment settings to improve the quality of life
- Consults and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team and others involved in the resident's care
- Provides leadership oversight of team members and accountability to policies and procedures such as uniform, shift start times, absenteeism and professional interactions
- Assists residents during activity programs, memory enhancement programs and performance improvement exercises
o Performs various laundry and meal service duties
- Focuses on solving conflict and not blaming
- Listens to others without interrupting and keeps emotions under control- Remains open to others' ideas and tries new things

- Must be proficient in English and able to read, write and follow instructions in English (Rule 111-8-63-.20 2b) :
- Demonstrates and knowledgeable of the Six (6) Rights of Medication Pass ("Right" resident, medication, dosage, time, route, right to refuse)

- Ability to work evenings, weekends and flexible hours when necessary to meet the needs of our residents

- Perform other related duties as assigned.
