General Summary of Duties

Physician Assistant (PA) and / or Nurse Practitioner (NP) shall be responsible for providing medical care under the general supervision of a physician, surgeons, and other healthcare workers.

They examine patient, prescribed medicines, and other diagnostic tests. In some instances, they work independently and consults Physicians when they need help with cases.

Applies medical techniques and principles under the direction of a physician and will deal with diverse sets of patients.

As necessary, make house calls or visit nursing homes to treat patients.

Education and Experience

Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner studies, health science or medical science. Requires state licensure in Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner or eligibility of the same field.

CPR Certification and other related certifications.

Has at least 2 years experience in the field of Physician Assistant and / or Nurse Practitioner. Or a proven work as a Physician Assistant.

Major Responsibilities / Tasks

  • Promotes and maintains patient health by providing medical services under the supervision of a physician.
  • Contributes to a physician’s efficiency by identifying short-term and long-range patient care issues.
  • Recommends options and courses of action for patient care.
  • Obtain medical history to include but not exclusive of current complaints, past medical history, family medical history, social history, medications, allergies, compliance with previous treatments and care plans, and determine which diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have been done.
  • Should also be able to measure / record physiologic and growth indices, as well as apply health promotion principles and techniques.
  • Administer immunizations.
  • Provides acute and chronic patient care including orthopedic exam, wellness physical exams, pre-operative interview and exam (H&P), monitoring therapies, administering injections, minor office surgical procedures, and prescribing medications.
  • Operating room care includes positioning patient, suturing wounds, and manipulation of the patient and use of surgical instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Triage patient calls and take appropriate action, or refer to appropriate physician or office staff.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, including use of CPR.
  • Document patient information and care provided in patient records, and maintain department statistics.
  • Use a computer to access / enter needed data. Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Educates patients and families as appropriate. Provide continuity of care.
  • Maintain a safe, secure and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations
  • Assures compliance with all the policies / procedures of the state where he / she is assigned, and all appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations
  • Perform hospital rounds.
  • Review labs, diagnostics and physical therapy progress notes.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervising physicians.

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of medical chart reporting / records.

Environmental / Working Conditions

This can be a physically demanding career. You'll be lifting, shifting, and maneuvering patients who are unable to do these things for themselves, and the job also requires long hours on your feet.

This is particularly true for those who work in hospital and operating room settings.

It can be emotionally draining as well, due to ongoing involvement with the sick, the handicapped, patients who aren't expected to recover, and grieving and worried families.
