Job Shift : Shift 3

Shift Details : PCU - Stepdown unit, 24 and 36 hours, primarily night shift available. Every other weekend and rotating holidays.

Newly licensed RN / GN applications accepted for Nurse Residency.

Sign-on bonus eligible for nurses with more than one year PCU / ICU RN experience.

For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut.

We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services.

E3 is a combined telemetry and Progressive Care Unit containing 25 beds and a team of nursing and healthcare professionals with excellent critical thinking skills and specialized training to provide the highest level of care.

Our team has specialty training to care for complex stroke, vascular, neurological and specialty surgery populations as well as intermediate care patients.

Combining our skill and use of innovative technology, our patient and family centered care creates an environment that promotes caring and healing.

JOB SUMMARY

Demonstrates clinical competence through utilization of the nursing process and development of a synergistic nurse-patient relationship.

Assesses and identifies patient problems / needs, establishes a plan of care, implements and evaluates care provided to patients.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate of a school of Nursing. BSN preferred
  • One (1) year RN experience and / or successful completion of the Backus Hospital Nurse Residency Program. Two (2) or more years of experience in this clinical area preferred.
  • Current unrestricted license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to pass the dysrhythmia test within 3 months of hire.
  • Must be able to pass the BKAT with a score of 80% or complete a critical care course within one (1) year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain department specific certifications. Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Basic knowledge of Nursing principles and practices. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Communicates effectively in order to provide technical or complex information as well as instruction.

Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with departments, employees, physicians, managers and patients. Ability to handle multiple priorities, be flexible and a team player.

Ability to work in a stressful environment. Commitment to customer service. Basic computer knowledge in order to enter / retrieve data.

PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING

Requires high level of analytical ability in order to gather and interpret information from various sources. Able to take the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances, problems and / or emergency situations.
