About The Position

The Director of Cinema Operations reports to the Chief Operating Officer and oversees the management, budgeting, workforce planning, and effective performance of SIFF's year round cinema operations employees, facilities and operations vendors across our four year round cinema venues;

SIFF Cinema Downtown, SIFF Film Center, SIFF Cinema Egyptian, and SIFF Cinema Uptown. This position emphasizes excellent customer experience in our venues, and cultivates a positive workplace experience & culture with the goal of employee recruitment and retention.

The Director of Cinema Operations is a member of the Senior Leadership Team supporting SIFF's strategic goals and organizational values and responsible for creating and driving long term planning to improve SIFF’s systems, processes, and policies in support of SIFF’s mission.

While the role primarily works standard weekday office hours, there is a need to be available to support cinema operations (weekends and evenings) and occasional special, emergency or on-call functions.

The functions that report to this role include : Projection and technical operations, year round cinema management staff and facilities manager.

Manages : Cinema Management team, Technical Operations team, Facilities Manager

Salary Range : $105,000-$120,000 depending on experience

Summary of key duties and deliverables

Strategy And Operations Planning and Management :

  • Develop the overall cinema operations strategy and annual plan to support excellent visitor experiences for SIFF year round cinema programs.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor income and expenses for the annual cinema operations budget.
  • Guide the development of key performance indicators for year-round cinema operations for regular reporting internally and externally.
  • Lead the use of key performance indicators and performance analysis to monitor program success, communicate risks and opportunities and drive the overall success of the program.
  • Leverage operations program data to encourage continuous improvement and performance that aligns with high-level organizational goals.
  • Guide effective proactive and responsive facilities management to ensure the long term care and investment in SIFF’s properties.
  • Provide planning and oversight of cinema operations to create accessible cinema experiences for all cinema visitors.
  • Create and monitor emergency planning and preparedness plans for cinema facilities and staff.

People Management :

  • Provide proactive and effective leadership over cinema management team and technical operations teams.
  • Provide general development, coaching, support, and HR compliance for direct reports, cinema employees and overall operations staff
  • Provide hiring and supervision over all year-round cinema operations staff and union workers, including year-round performance management, and ensuring staff are properly hired, trained, coached and supported in their roles.
  • Ensure operations training manuals and job descriptions are up-to-date for all cinema operations staff.
  • Collaborate with Senior Leadership Team members for workforce planning & employee engagement.
  • Partner with and support HR for union contract matters and bargaining.
  • Drive training and professional development in the year-round cinema operations team that contributes to long-term operational excellence and through the retention and growth of staff.

SIFF Leadership, Union Relations, Board and Community Engagement

  • Represent year round SIFF Cinema Operations internally, at board meetings, in Union interactions and externally, as needed.
  • Serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team regarding organizational priorities, policies, and procedures.
  • Attend Board meetings as needed and contribute to Board committees, as needed.
  • Collaborate internally across SIFF teams (festival and education programs, marketing, development, finance and administration, SIFFsupports) to achieve shared goals, identify new opportunities and areas for growth and to ensure the overall successful delivery of all SIFF programs.
  • Collaborate with SIFF staff to interface with neighbors and community organizations in support of effective SIFF Cinema Operations in the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • Bachelor's degree in business management, film or arts operations and / or management or equivalent experience.
  • Superior relationship skills with demonstrated leadership experience in organizational culture, inclusivity, racial equity and social justice programs and initiatives.
  • A minimum of seven years of supervisory of people management experience or equivalent.
  • Five years of progressively increasing responsibilities in film festival, cinema operations, large scale public events of 100 or more visitors, or equivalent.
  • Four years experience with budget development.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in cost modeling, financial forecasting and using data to analyze and communicate with various stakeholder groups.
  • Three years of demonstrated experience facilitating or leading operational strategic planning and developing operations dashboard metrics.
  • Experience with large scale / complex budget planning (over $5 million).
  • Demonstrated experience supervising cross-functional and multi-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience with employee onboarding, training, performance management, and professional development.
  • General, working knowledge of film projection / tech or relevant technology.
  • Strong technology skills, with thorough knowledge of Google Suite, Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, Powerpoint), workforce software or equivalent.

Desired

  • Project management certification.
  • Love of and experience with independent cinema and film festivals.
