Pediatric Surgery Nurse Practitioner II (NURSE PRACT 2)

Job Summary

To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis.

This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols (e.

g. chemotherapy) as defined by standardized procedures or independently based on licensure. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures, surgical procedures, including operative first assist per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available on the Medical Staff Office.

Patient management decisions will be independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team.

NPs are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.

Provides patient care in a team based care environment to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations.

Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications

• Two years or greater of Pediatric ICU RN or NP experience.
• One year or greater recent experience as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
• Graduation with a master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
• American Heart Association (AHA) PALS Certification
• National Board Certification as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP AC)
• Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
• California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License
• California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
• Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire
• American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR Certification
• National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area
• Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients
• Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role
• Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider

Preferred Qualifications

• One year or greater recent clinical experience as a nurse practitioner in pediatric surgery highly desirable
• CCRN

Department Description

The Pediatric Surgery Nurse Practitioner will care for pediatric trauma and pediatric general surgery service patients and their families.

The pediatric surgery service will include care in the OR, PACU, acute care floor, emergency department, PICU, and NICU.

The role of the pediatric surgery NP is to facilitate multi-disciplinary care through interaction with patients, housestaff, attendings and nurses.

Patient care provided includes but not limited to, initiating appropriate consultations and referrals, post-operative patient evaluation and care, follow-up evaluations;

and patient care planning and discharges, care education, and coordination of care. The NP will also provide education to patients, family members, ICU team members, and medical providers including medical students, residents, and fellow physicians.

NPs may participate in the design and implementation of research and / or quality improvement studies within the Pediatric Surgery Department.
