Busy Multi-location Ophthalmology Practice, looking for an enthusiastic Ophthalmic Assistant :

Qualifications :

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA or willingness to complete required.
• No prior experience required!

Responsibilities :

The Ophthalmic Assistant helps the Ophthalmologist and Optometrist in the diagnostic testing, examination, education, and treatment of patients.

Escorts patients to examining rooms, takes detailed medical histories, and determines the reason for the visit. Is able to take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity.

Checks patient's pupils, muscle, visual acuity, extraocular movements, and any other diagnostic tests.

Reviews patient charts to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history.

Presents patient history summary and alerts Ophthalmologist / Optometrist to changes in visual acuity, elevated extraocular pressure or blood pressure, etc.

Acts as scribe while physician examines patient entering data into electronic medical records or handwrites in paper chart, oversees patient flow.

Administers topical medications or diagnostic drugs as required by the Ophthalmologist / Optometrist for testing or treatment including cycloplegics, mydriatics, and topical anesthetics that are not controlled substances.

Assists with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures.

Schedules surgeries, calling surgical center, verifying times with patients, and preparing charts, pre-admission and consent forms.

Schedules patients with other doctors for consultation as required.

Counsels / Educates patients in the office and on the phone concerning physician's orders, use of drops, contact lenses, medications, and answers questions concerning surgery.

Is able to take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity. Is able to perform lensometry, refractometry, applanation tonometry, basic muscle balance testing, assess pupils, assess the anterior chamber, confrontation visual fields and gross external exam.

Administer diagnostic tests.

Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.

Assists with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures.

Performs environmental cleaning and disinfection of clinical areas including equipment sterilization.

May be asked to assist with front office work, such as scheduling and patient insurance and admittance.
