The ITS / Data Science Specialist is an advanced transportation problem solver, able to leverage cutting-edge technological tools using software programming, data science, and transportation analytics.
The essential capabilities of an ITS / Data Science Specialist include the skills to understand and evaluate complex challenges and data sets in support of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Data Science, Smart Cities, and Software Applications (Parsons’ flagship product - iNET).
An ITS / Data Science Specialist can implement analytical tools, leverage advanced technologies, collaborate across multi-disciplinary groups, implement creative techniques, and demonstrate project management skills to deliver solutions.
There are four different types of analytics that you, as a data analyst, may use to do your job, including :
Prescriptive analytics to determine which action a business should take in a particular situation. Diagnostic analytics to evaluate why a particular situation occurred by analyzing various data sets and identifying patterns.
Descriptive analytics to assess trends by analyzing past data, such as sales and revenue in a given time period. Predictive analytics to uncover the most likely outcomes based on patterns and tendencies and to help businesses proactively take action.
Typical responsibilities include the following :
- Works on and manages ITS and data intensive projects, both standalone and as a component of larger projects for a variety of clients
- Conducting training sessions within and outside of Parsons on advanced transportation solutions.
- Works on transportation related projects to integrate advanced technologies
- Participates in strategic planning for development and marketing of ITS and Data Science services
- Provides mentoring and guidance to staff regarding technical components of ITS and Data Science projects
- Participates in regular staff meetings and project coordination meetings
- Participates in business development efforts, seeking new opportunities with new and existing clients
- Act as a teacher / mentor to staff, and help direct staff efforts on projects
- Assists in the development of ITS management plans as requested by clients
- Works with public transportation agency staff to understand their challenges, evaluate and recommend strategies, and follow through with delivery of solutions.
- Woks collaboratively with Parsons staff and clients to successfully complete project assignments
- Participates in and presents project findings in writing and at client meetings
Typical assignments will include but are not limited to :
- Collecting data from various sources
- Streamlining data collection methods to create automated and easy-to-use routines
- Designing databases and data systems
- Maintaining databases and data systems by addressing errors and monitoring performance
- Analyzing collected data and putting it into a format that others can easily interpret
- Interpreting data trends and patterns as they relate to the organization
- Preparing reports for clients to use based on project tasks
- Collaborating with other employees, including engineers and programmers, to determine areas of analysis and improvement in relation to data
- Project management direct or support duties as determined per project and per task per project
Education : The ITS / Data Science Specialist position requires a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, GIS or systems engineering with an emphasis on transportation-related studies, with a strong preference for a Master’s and / or PhD degree in engineering related fields of study.
Highly desirable areas of expertise include :
- Experience with transportation operations analysis tools, including macro and micro simulation softwares.
- Familiarity with geospatial data, geographic data structures, and ESRI ArcGIS tools
- Experience with statistical and analytics software, including but not limited to R, Python, and MATLAB
- Presenting information using data visualization software, such as Tableau or Sisense
- Understanding of machine learning concepts and mathematical analysis
- Experience with data structures, data formats, and data mining techniques

Salary Range :
$149,900.00 - $269,800.00
