Software Development Manager, Network Data Plane

The Data Plane team owns for forwarding for the switches in the Amazon network and is part of the NPD (Network Product Development) team.

As a leader in this team, you will dive deep to understand Amazon's network architecture and partner with our forwarding ASIC vendors, network engineering, peer software teams, and other AWS service teams to develop the embedded systems that power Amazon's network device platforms.

You will own the software quality and speed of delivery of all new solutions and identify opportunities to invent and simplify the systems used throughout the AWS network.

We are looking for a software leader to lead a team of engineers to realize our vision of delivering and owning the world’s fastest network.

The successful candidate is expected to be a technical manager who can deliver through a high-performing engineering team and who understands and sets a high bar for all parts of the software development, deployment, and operational life cycle including : design, development, documentation, testing, and operations.

You must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, be self-driven, and deliver high-quality results in a fast-paced environment.

What will you be doing here?

  • Work backwards from customer needs, build and track business metrics by which the team works to improve customer impact.
  • Plan, develop, deploy, and maintain networking software stack, deployment, operation tools, and life-cycle management software for highly scaled network.
  • Recruit, coach, and mentor senior and junior software engineers.
  • Work with management, customers, and adjacent development teams to build state-of-the-art solutions, incorporate new technologies, and algorithms.
  • Set quality standards, build mechanisms and processes for team efficiency, continuously inventing and simplifying.

About the team : AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements :

3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of engineering experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software / hardware / networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring / coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400 / year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700 / year in our highest geographic market.

Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and / or other benefits.
