Position Focus :

The Morse College Service Assistant provides a high-level customer service to all residents and guests of the Morse Head of College Residence and Guest Suite.

The Service Assistant ensures smooth and efficient daily operations of the House, including but not limited to : independent event planning and management, inventory tracking and management, high-level food preparation and presentation, financial expense reporting, and general housekeeping.

The responsibilities require a systematic approach to special event planning and execution and combines detail-oriented housekeeping and timely responses to the needs of the Head of College and his / her family.

This position requires a focus on delivering high level customer service to all residents and guests. The Service Assistant will plan, organize, cater and oversee events for up to guests with limited supervision.

The Service Assistant is expected to independently plan and make decisions on all facets of the events and catering experience, with minimal input from the Head of College and Assistant Director of Operations.

This includes, but is not limited to, layout, labor, execution, timeline, menu items and quantities, cooking technique, and food and beverage procurement.

The Service Assistant will also be required to coordinate all ongoing maintenance performed on the house such as : opening doors, fielding calls, scheduling, and providing general support to all maintenance and repair men and women.

The Service Assistant will report to the Head of College, and work closely with the Associate Head of College and Assistant Director of Operations of the residential college.

Weekend and evening hours are required as needed. Weekly schedule will fluctuate based on needs and additional hours may be required.

Essential Duties

1. Serves meals and refreshments and tends bar for daily lunch and special functions. Provides liaison with kitchen staff to coordinate timing, guest counts, etc.

2. Opens and closes restaurant and register and receives and disburses cash. May issue and obtain receipts. 3. Cleans, maintains and removes trash form assigned areas including Grille Room, Garden Room, 9th Tee Halfway House, bar area, waitstaff areas in kitchen, restrooms, patio area, and First tee Pavilion.

Maintains stock of necessary items including paper products, clean glassware, utensils, etc. 4. Trains and oversees activities of waitstaff.

Provides input to waitstaff schedule prepared by manager. 5. Coordinates waitstaff in setting up and breaking down special functions according to specifications.

Provides input to floor plans for large functions or develops / revises floor plans for smaller functions as requested by manager.

6. Maintains inventory of beverages including beer and wine. Notifies manager of items to be ordered or places orders with suppliers.

Confirms linen and other orders from outside services and picks up food supplies for functions as necessary. 7. Maintains a record of beer / wine consumption for certain functions.

8. Assists in aspects of meal preparation and washes dishes and cooking utensils as necessary. 9. Changes table linens and maintains organized linen storage area.

10. Participates in food / wine selections through attendance at food shows, wine tastings, etc. 11. Performs additional functions incidental to service activities.

Required Education and Experience

Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education;

or two years of related work experience and an Associates Degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill / Ability 1 :

Demonstrated ability planning and organizing events. Exceptional organizational skills. Strong attention to detail. Ability to prioritize among multiple tasks to completion.

Strong verbal communication skills.

Required Skill / Ability 2 :

Ability to learn new systems (Yale Messaging, WorkDay, and other assorted software programs). Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word and Intermediate Excel.

Proven ability to create and track expense reports. Ability to use machines that require little training to operate.

Required Skill / Ability 3 :

Ability to be self-directed, proactive and flexible in an ever-changing environment. Must have a valid license and have ability to provide own transportation, willing to travel up to 20 miles to obtain supplies and materials for college events.

Required Skill / Ability 4 :

Demonstrated solid and reliable attendance record. Ability to follow direction and take initiative. Understands short notes, basic written instructions, and forms.

Ability to independently refer callers and visitors to the appropriate individual. Strong written communication skills. Priority consideration will be given to candidates who submit a cover letter.

Required Skill / Ability 5 :

Appreciation and respect for principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ability to engage with diverse individuals (age, gender, nationality, race / ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).

Candidate must be able to work with dogs.
