Position description

We seek an experienced scientist to advance our research at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Neurology in the laboratory of Richard Staba, Ph.D.

Dr. Staba's laboratory studies epilepsy in patients who are candidates for surgical treatment to treat their seizure disorder and in preclinical models, specifically traumatic brain injury.

We perform neuroimaging and direct brain recordings during presurgical diagnostic evaluation and in the lateral fluid percussion injury model of human closed-head injury.

Our research focuses on functional and structural mechanisms of epilepsy that generate seizures and contribute to the development of epilepsy.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing basic human subject research, including data collection and analysis, support preclinical experiments, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, supervising research personnel, and assist in the preparation of grant proposals.

This is a fulltime appointment but will be split with the department of Psychiatry. This position will be 50% in Neurology.

Salary range is $90100-111400

Specific Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this position are intracerebral EEG data collection, signal processing of interictal and ictal EEG signals, processing of pre- and post-operative neuroimaging, and high-order mathematical analysis that includes, but not limited to, graph theory, computational modeling, machine learning, and parametric and non-parametric statistics, and training and supervising the work of research personnel involved with clinical and preclinical research.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD or MD or both. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in the following areas : human subject research, macroelectrode and microelectrode recordings, signal processing, and programming in languages like MATLAB, Python, and R.

Applicants must have experience in studies of seizures, interictal spikes, high-frequency oscillations, and single neurons, processing of structural MRI and post-implant CT for electrode localization, and structure-function correlation analysis.

Additional Duties

  • Ability to work on multiple funded and new projects efficiently and effectively
  • Plan feasible timelines for experiments and reliably execute tasks at designated time points
  • Required to communicate well with other scientists
  • Candidate should have 5 years research experience in neuroscience in an academic setting or equivalent.
  • The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out data collection and analysis with minimal supervision.
