Reliability Engineer
JOB SUMMARY :
This position leads the site preventative maintenance and mechanical integrity function, including building a robust electronic file system, improving inspection procedures, continually reviewing the critical equipment list, and training the maintenance organization as needed.
The incumbent works closely with the Maintenance Manager to assist with defining, planning, and scheduling all maintenance work, including day-to-day activities, one-day outages, preventative maintenance, and major shut downs.
JOB REQUIREMENTS :
Education and Experience
- B.S. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (other engineering considered with 10+ years relevant experience)
- At least five (5) years of industrial experience in a chemical plant or other related industry experience. Experience working in a union environment a plus.
- At least one to three (1-3) years of maintenance and supervisory experience.
- Strong background in preventative maintenance and mechanical reliability.
- Working knowledge of chemical plant equipment (pumps, piping, heat exchangers, vessels, instrumentation, etc.).
- Background in maintenance and repair of equipment in order to effectively plan and define maintenance department activities.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- Understand the basis for establishing and maintaining an effective mechanical integrity / reliability program.
- Must have experience using (CMMS) Computerized Maintenance Management System (i.e. Tabware or similar).
- Experience using an ERP (Microsoft Dynamics AX, SAP, or similar) preferred.
- Experience working in batch chemical operations preferred.
- Knowledge of Federal / State EPA and OSHA compliance standards.

- Demonstrated capability to analyze and troubleshoot operational and equipment problems, then provide reasonable and accurate recommendations or solutions.
- Must be able to identify and prioritize multiple projects and perform work with a constant focus on improving processes.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing to individuals; ability to present complex situations in a concise manner.
- Ability to build partnerships and interact effectively with technical and professional contacts across functional groups, as well as with the hourly workforce.
- Effective team building skills.
- Must have excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal relationship skills.
- Computer skills are a must with knowledge of CMMS, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and MS PowerPoint.
- Proven experience utilizing work management process to plan and schedule maintenance work is preferred.
- Proven experience and effectiveness successfully managing a union hourly workforce is preferred.
- Must be able to work extended hours, weekends as needed, to manage and direct projects, unexpected operational / equipment failures, scheduled operation shutdowns etc.
The ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs such as climbing, lifting balancing, walking, standing, stooping, climbing stairs, handling of materials, etc.

The Reliability Engineer reports to the Maintenance Manager who in turn reports to the site Operations Manager.
Most frequent contacts include Operations Management, Engineering, Corporate Manager of EH&S, Maintenance CMMS-Storeroom-Planner, Mechanics, Electricians, Instrumentation / Electronic Technicians and Production Employees.
On occasion, directs the activities of a skill-craft work group (7) consisting of mechanics, electricians and instrumentation / electronic technicians on equipment reliability issues.
Other contacts may include Contractors, Vendors and Senior Managers.
The position requires an individual with strong organizational, analytical, technical and leadership skills; problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills, independent judgement skills, inter-personal and people management skills.
The Reliability Engineer must possess the ability and skills to effectively provide direction, lead and work in a diverse team environment and communicate in non-technical terms to non-technical individuals.
The key challenges and responsibilities of the position :
- Lead step-change enhancement of existing reliability and preventative maintenance programs to best in class or World Class standards, including ongoing continuous improvement efforts around these programs.
- Completion of implementation of Tabware CMMS and refinement of same.
- Define, plan, and assist with scheduling and electronically document PM activities.
- Provide maintenance & reliability support for production and engineering activities to ensure optimum results.
- Investigate maintenance related problems, analyze root causes and drive resolutions.
Ensure compliance of proper safety, quality and environmental requirements in work.
