ROLE AND PURPOSE :
- Provide instruction and coach students to develop skills and ability to excel in sport assigned.
- Contribute to education program as a whole and to the growth of students involved in athletics.
QUALIFICATIONS :
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION :
- Bachelor's degree
- Valid Texas teaching certificate or eligible for alternative certification
EXPERIENCE :
- Experience as a coach or participant in sport
- General knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures
- Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules
- Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :
INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT
- Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned.
- Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
- Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.
- Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students' athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
SCHOOL / ORGANIZATION CLIMATE
- Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
- Work with athletic director to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements.
SCHOOL / ORGANIZATIONAL IMPROVEMENT
- Keep informed of and ensure compliance with all UIL rules.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make changes based on findings.
ADMINISTRATION AND FISCAL / FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
- Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program.
- Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment.
STUDENT MANAGEMENT
- Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on out-of-town trips.
- Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
- Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
SCHOOL / COMMUNITY RELATIONS
Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise assigned assistant coaches and student athletic assistants.
MISCELLANEOUS
- Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors : Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Frequent districtwide and statewide travel.
- Frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
- Outdoor exposure to sun and heat.
- Position days worked varies according to coaching assignment. (187 days plus the listed early report days.)
- Head Coaches may serve as Game Administrator based on district need at a minimum of 15 athletic events and must meet the following Arlington ISD and UIL requirements : In all UIL varsity athletic team contests, a game administrator shall be appointed by the home school.
That person shall be a coach (other than the game coach), teacher or administrator.They should arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the contest starting.
It is recommended that a game administrator be designated by the home school for all non-varsity athletic team contests.The responsibilities of the game administrator are as follows : See that officials are directed to their dressing roomMeet with the officials prior to game time (preferably on the playing field or court)Inform the officials where the game administrator will be seatedAssist the officials if they need to discourage unsportsmanlike conduct of a fan, player or coach (such as removal from the gym)Check with the officials after the game to see if there is any misconduct that needs to be reportedOffer to provide an escort for the officials to their carsReport incidents to the appropriate school administrator (home team or visitor)Report severe verbal abuse or physical contact of the official and any ejections of coaches and fans to the UIL office and Arlington ISD campus / athletic administration in writing within the next two working days.
These events will be scheduled by your campus coordinator in conjunction with the campus principal. These duties will fall outside of your in-season sport.
The only exception would be serving as the game administrator for your sub varsity teams when they do not play with the varsity team.
NOTE : In order to minimize current campus disruption, current Teachers and Teacher Assistants may only apply to job postings if the position is a promotion.
A promotion is defined by an increase in salary grade or incremental stipend. This does not apply if the transfer window is open.
