The Chief of Staff to the Dean of the School of Public Health oversees a wide range of executive and project support for the dean, leading strategy development and execution of high-priority objectives and advancing and coordinating the work of the dean's office to promote the School's priorities and academic mission.

The chief of staff serves as a strategic advisor to the dean, prioritizing issues requiring the dean's attention, and ensuring timely execution on matters that advance the School's goals, objectives, and priorities.

This position is responsible for ensuring the dean is well prepared for meetings, events, travel and speaking opportunities;

and that all necessary linkages are made and follow up is done stemming from these activities.

This role is a member of the dean's leadership team, the chief of staff works closely with the dean to manage commitments and deliverables of the leadership team to drive organizational progress, ensuring critical meetings, activities and events are designed to advance the School's priorities and maximize the dean's limited time.

Primary responsibilities of this role include coordinating closely with the Advancement office on fundraising strategy and goals, collaborating with the Executive Dean of Finance and Administration, the Academic Dean, and other members of the leadership team on managing the dean's office strategic budget, and multi-year resource management.

  • The COS will take the lead on high-priority requests of the dean. The chief of staff manages the Director of Dean's Initiatives, overseeing the development of briefing memos, remarks and other communication materials for internal and external engagement as needed;
  • leads and manages special projects; manages decision-making about speaking engagements; assigns responsibility for projects / issues not requiring the dean's involvement and tracks progress to ensure completion;

and oversees day-to-day administrative dean's operations.

The chief of staff serves as a liaison with academic and administrative leaders throughout Brown, and ensures the dean is well-informed about general School of Public Health and University issues, providing accurate and objective information and perspectives.

Education : Bachelor's degree and or Master Degree or a combination of Education and Experience

Experience : Preferred 7 to 10 years of relevant experience in higher education or related fields.

Competencies :

Experience working with university senior officers on different aspects of strategic academic and administrative issues.

Working knowledge of issues, challenges and emerging trends in higher education and public health.

Demonstrated capacity to work both collaboratively and independently, to exercise sound judgment, and to handle sensitive and confidential matters.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a complex and diverse community.

Demonstrated track record of establishing a cooperative work environment and creating strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders across the University in support of the achievement of key institutional objectives.

A capacity to embrace change and identify creative and innovative solutions to complex problems.

Appreciates the value and has the skills to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
