The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa River Landing clinic is seeking a patient centered individual for our 100% Support Services Specialist in the Ophthalmology department at IRL.

Oversee the clinical technicians (clinical technician, ophthalmic clinical specialists, other team members as assigned) team and provide direct patient care at IRL in the Ophthalmology Department.

Provides essential administrative and operational support. Serves as an initial point of contact for cross sectional troubleshooting, problem solving and coordination of new initiatives.

Collaborates closely with faculty and leadership staff in the section to plan for, implement and evaluate strategic initiatives, including clinical initiatives, operational initiatives, and informatics initiatives.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Provide direct care and diagnostic testing, such as visual acuity, motility, pupil function, tonometry, lensometry, eye drop installation, color plates topography, auto-refraction, tear-testing, and other tests as appropriate.
  • Addresses staffing needs throughout the day be stepping into staffing and / or trouble shooting the situation by relocating staff as needed to utilize staff in the most effective approach.
  • Provides direction, coaching and support to staff.
  • Provides effective communication / education to all team members through various means of media in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance, inventory, and ordering of supplies.
  • Maintains quality controls for Nova Meter and other ophthalmic equipment.
  • EPIC Superuser-attends and shares any EPIC related updates with clinical team.
  • Participates / presents at staff meetings on EPIC updates and workflow adjustments.
  • Creates staffing assignments based on clinic volumes in partnership with leadership.
  • Completes Joint Commission AMP tracers and other regulatory preparation activities.
  • Works with leadership and Ophthalmic professional to provide education and precepting to new staff / current staff.
  • Assists with clinical conference learning activities.
  • May participate in recruitment / interview process.
  • Provide telephone consultation and follow-up to support patients and their families. Apply appropriate medical interventions and protocols based on patient problems and symptoms.
  • Uses procedures, skills, techniques to prevent cross contamination and transmission of infection according to infection control standards, policies, and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with other medical personnel in preparation of patients and families for procedures, including obtaining medical and social histories.
  • Communicate with third-party payers regarding issues of medical necessity and benefits coverage for patients.
  • Compose written care management summaries, clinic visit notes, summaries and letters.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advance practice providers, other care providers, nursing personnel and other health disciplines to facilitate meeting patient and family needs.
  • Complete medication prior authorization as needed.
  • Coordinate electronic medical record and data entry processes. May assist physician with scribing.
  • Maintain patient rights and confidentiality and serve as a patient advocate.
  • Provides feedback to supervisor performing annual evaluations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Associate Director of Nursing or designee.

Percent of Time : 100%

Schedule : 40 hours per week will be completed between 8 : 00 am - 5 : 00 pm Monday - Friday

Location : Iowa River Landing

Pay Structure : 3A - https : / / hr.uiowa.edu / pay / pay-plans / professional-and-scientific-pay-structure, The starting salary is between $40,527.00 - $62,046.00.

E ducation Requirements :

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) as an ophthalmic assistant (COA)

Required Qualifications :

  • Minimum of one year of related experience providing clinical care.
  • Minimum of one-year supervisory experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including relaying complicated medical information in a clear, concise, and definitive manner to health care professionals.
  • Previous experience and ability to work in a fast-paced and time-critical environment.
  • Previous experience and ability to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail including strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word and Excel), computer applications and databases.

Desired Qualifications :

Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) as an ophthalmic assistant (COT)
