Posting Information Posting Number PG193528EP Internal Recruitment No Working Title Assistant / Associate / Full Professor of Small Animal Surgery Anticipated Hiring Range Commensurate with experience and credentials.

Work Schedule TBD Job Location Raleigh, NC Department Department of Clinical Sciences About the Department The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging the animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.

North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.

With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH) is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine.

Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care.

Each year, over 32,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from CVM, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary

medicine. Essential Job Duties Small animal surgeons are being sought to join NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine as faculty, at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (with rank and tenure status determined based on experience level).

Our preference is to hire candidates who are already board-certified by the ACVS (or ECVS), and who have a record for successful independent research evidenced by grants and manuscripts.

However, we also encourage and support applications from both early-career candidates (e.g., residency-trained and board-eligible) and experienced colleagues looking to shift from the private sector to academia.

Our surgical programs have historically been split into two complementary clinical services : soft tissue and oncologic surgery, and orthopedics.

If your interests neatly fit within that traditional model, great. If you’re looking for something a bit different, no problem.

What we’re looking to do is hire the most energetic and enthusiastic surgeons possible and we’re happy to flex a bit to make this happen!

These are traditional faculty positions, and as a general guide one could expect about half of the year to be spent in the clinic (engaged in primary case management, as well as supervision / training of students, interns, and residents), a third of the year dedicated to research, and the balance of time split between non-clinical teaching (e.

g., didactic teaching, facilitating labs, etc.) and service (e.g., committee work internally at NC State, and externally for groups such as ACVS).

If a different distribution of time / effort would better fit your professional aspirations, let’s have a conversation about it.

NC State is located in Raleigh, North Carolina in the heart of the Research Triangle . There are abundant opportunities to collaborate with colleagues right here at the University both within our College, and also across other units (e.

g., developing novel antimicrobial agents or fluorescent surgical dyes with our chemists, building new surgical devices with collaborators in the College of Engineering, or designing novel wound dressings with experts in the Wilson College of Textiles).

Additionally, our faculty regularly interact with physician colleagues at the nearby top-ranked medical schools (Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University), thus maximizing our comparative medicine footprint, and fully engaging in One-Health.

We also have strong relationships with industry partners (i.e., pharma, biotech) right here in the Research Triangle Park.

The College’s Research Office facilitates traditional benchtop research. There is also a Clinical Studies Core set up to help faculty execute clinical trials within our hospital setting.

And for those who prefer the social sciences, we have a growing group of faculty with experience and expertise, and a willingness to collaborate in various aspects of educational research.

Finally, for those who are research newbies (and also for experienced colleagues who just need a bit of extra support), the College offers ample opportunities for training and mentorship in all areas of research, from initial study design, to grant writing, budgeting, and grant management.

Whether you’re just finishing a training program and want to dip your toes in the proverbial waters of academic veterinary medicine, or have decades of experience and are on the hunt for greener pastures, we encourage you to consider applying.
